Enroute Aul - Ratnagiri - Lalitgiri - Udayagiri - Bhubaneshwar

Today, we take the road to Bhubaneshwar. Along the way, we cross the golden triangle of Orissa. These three hills and their surroundings form an amazing Buddhist complex. The Chinese pilgrim Hiuen T'sang founded the seat of a flourishing Buddhist university there, namely Puspagiri. Testifying to the ancient glory of the place, vast ruins of brick pagodas, ornate stone portals and esoteric Buddhist images have been restored. We visit Ratnagiri, nestled on the banks of the Birup river, approximately 100 km from Bhubaneshwar. Ratnagiri contains beautiful Buddhist relics. It appears that Buddhism was taught in these places created from the 6th century AD until the 12th century. The Ratnagiri museum is also worth a detour. We then go to Lalitgiri. It is one of the oldest Buddhist complexes dating from the first century. Subsequently, we head to Udayagiri, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in Orissa, known for its bell-shaped stupa representing Vajrayana (tantric Buddhism). Upon our arrival in Bhubaneswar, we are directly transferred to the hotel.

The visit to Bhubaneswar

Today's circuit allows us to follow in the footsteps of the Jains. Religious center of Tribhubaneswar or « Lord Lingaraj », Bhubaneshwar is an important Hindu pilgrimage destination. Hundreds of temples dot the landscape of the old city, which has existed for 2000 years. While the modern city buzzes, its landscape arouses curiosity, between the spires of the Lingaraj temple, the white dome of the peace pagoda on the hill of Dhauli and the pink hues of Mahariva Jina. Together, they embody the emergence of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism through the different periods of Orissa's history. Among Bhubaneswar's 600 temples, the Lingaraja Templededicated to Shiva is among the most refined and most impressive buildings. Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter, but can still observe the monument from an external platform. Besides that, we have the opportunity to visit the Rajarani templebuilt in pink and golden sandstone, one of the city's most popular constructions. Furthermore, the Mukteshwar templeis among the remarkable temples in Bhubaneswar, with its architectural style similar to that of the Kalinga Temple. We can also explore the Parashurameswartemple built in 650 AD. Small, but richly decorated, this sacred place also called Shiva Shrine houses many statues of couples, animals and floral motifs.

Excursion to Jagannath Temple - Satpada Chilka Lake - Raghurajpur

Today, we set off to discover the Temple of Jagannath in Puri, one of the most sacred sites in India and a major pilgrimage destination. According to legend, Jagannath owes its extraordinary form to the unfinished work of the god Vswakarma, who, in anger, did not complete his portrait of Lord Vishnu. This is a mythical place not to be missed for tourists passing through the region.
Attention: Non-Hindus are not permitted to enter the Jagannath temple, but they can view it from the platform of the Raghunathan Library. The latter is closed on Sundays, but another platform outside the temple offers another viewing angle of the monument.

After visiting the temple, we head towards the Chilka Lake to observe dolphins. This vast lake on the East coast of Orissa is home to magnificent islands. We find flamingos floating on shallow waters and many other birds coming from afar, notably from the Caspian Sea, the Aral Sea and other parts of Mongolia, Central Asia and Southeast Asia. And this is just a glimpse of what Chilika Lake has to offer. Extending over more than 1,100 km² covering three districts of Orissa, the place embodies a true paradise for nature lovers and ornithology enthusiasts. The best time to visit the lake is in winter, when birds choose to migrate to the island.
Optional: The boat ride on the lake to see dolphins is optional.

In the late afternoon, we head to Raghurajpur, a charming village located just a short distance from Puri. The craft activities of Raghurajpur contribute to the destination's reputation throughout the country. The village has around 100 houses and 300 artisans. We can stroll around, admire the magnificent frescoes painted on the walls, interact with the artisans, watch them at work and of course, purchase their works, to bring back authentic souvenirs.
Optional: During our visit to Raghurajpur, learn the Gotipua dance, a typical folk dance of the village. It is performed by young boys disguised as female dancers imbued with grace. The postures and acrobatic movements are inspired by the life of Radha and Krishna, as well as other mythological tales.

The information below applies to travelers who are nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and Canada traveling to India for a tourist stay. Entry rules may evolve, so we recommend that you verify the information with the official authorities before your departure.

Passport

To enter India, your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into the country and contain at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn or altered pages).

Tourist Visa – e-Visa (Tourist eVisa)

Nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland and Canada must be in possession of a valid visa to enter India. There is no visa exemption for a tourist stay.

The most common solution is the Tourist eVisa, available online on the official Indian government portal. It is available for several durations:

  • Tourist eVisa 30 days (double entry),

  • Tourist eVisa 1 year (multiple entries, maximum stay of 90 days per visit),

  • Tourist eVisa 5 years (multiple entries, maximum stay of 90 days per visit).

The application must be submitted online at least 4 days before your arrival date and at most 120 days before. The eVisa is linked to your passport and is available only at certain designated airports and ports of entry.

Arrival and Immigration

When passing through immigration, Indian authorities may ask for:

  • confirmation of your eVisa (printed document or digital version),

  • an exit ticket from the territory (return flight or onward journey),

  • proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay,

  • the address of your first accommodation in India.

Health and Vaccinations

No vaccine is officially mandatory to enter India from the EEA, Switzerland or Canada, except in the case of transit through a country at risk of yellow fever (a yellow fever vaccination certificate will then be required).

As a preventive measure, health authorities generally recommend the following vaccinations:

  • hepatitis A and hepatitis B,

  • typhoid,

  • tetanus-poliomyelitis,

  • rabies (depending on planned activities),

  • Japanese encephalitis (depending on regions and length of stay).

Antimalarial treatment may be recommended depending on the regions you visit and the time of year. Consult a doctor or international vaccination center before your departure.

Traveling with Children

Minors must be holders of their own valid passport and their own eVisa covering the duration of the stay.

In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an exit authorization from the territory may be required according to the regulations of their country of residence.

Other Nationalities

Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Travelers concerned should inquire with the Indian embassy or consulate in their country of residence.
