Whether you are passionate about culture, a lover of enchanting landscapes or simply seeking an escape from the ordinary, this city promises an unforgettable experience immersed in royal heritage and the riches of Rajasthan. History
Udaipur benefits from a privileged location in the Mewar region. The kingdom of Mewar, steeped in many legends of valour, was among the most respected princely states in Rajasthan. The Sisodias, who ruled the region for more than twelve centuries, are among the oldest dynasties in the world. They established their capital in Chittor until the 6th century, before relocating it to Udaipur.
The city was named after Maharana Udai Singh. Legend has it that this sovereign went on a hunting expedition one day. On his way, he encountered a holy man meditating on a hill overlooking Lake Pichola. The sage offered his blessing to the lord and asked him to build a palace there, claiming he would be well protected there. Udai Singh heeded the sage's advice and the city of Udaipur was born.
Today
Udaipur has emerged as an essential stop on any journey through Rajasthan. The city has managed to preserve its royal heritage and impressive architecture, making it an ideal backdrop for cultural enthusiasts. This city, sometimes regarded as the "Kashmir of Rajasthan", was awarded the prize for best tourist destination in India in 2010. Nestled comfortably in a valley, surrounded by four lakes, Udaipur offers beautiful natural landscapes enhanced by human endeavour. Udaipur makes a perfect base for an escape getaway.
Culture and Traditions
Udaipur is a vibrant cultural centre, where the traditions of Rajasthan are celebrated with passion. Festivals such as the Mewar Festival and the Shilpgram Fair attract artists, artisans and visitors from all over the world. Folk music, dance performances and local craftsmanship (notably luxurious fabrics, miniature paintings and jewellery adorned with precious stones) are living expressions of the city's cultural heritage.

Udaipur presents itself as the "City of Lakes" in the western region of India. Without question, a sightseeing circuit in this Rajasthan city would be incomplete without nature excursions. Udaipur is perfect for couples looking to enjoy a romantic getaway away from the hustle and bustle of cities. This city is among the ideal places for an unforgettable honeymoon.
Taking boat rides on Lake Pichola is an unmissable experience to enjoy an exceptional view of the palaces and ghats from the water, especially in the late afternoon, at sunset, when the city illuminates with golden hues.
