Ongole
Ongole, the district headquarters of Prakasam in Andhra Pradesh, is an authentic stop on the Coromandel coast, famous for its cattle breed and its laid-back fishing beach.
Ongole is a coastal town in Andhra Pradesh, the district headquarters of Prakasam, situated on the coastal plain between Vijayawada and Nellore. It is known throughout India for its local cattle breed, the Ongole cattle, exported worldwide. The town offers access to the Coromandel coast and serves as a stop on the National Highway NH-16 connecting Chennai to Kolkata.
What to See
Ongole has no major historical monuments, but several points of interest are worth visiting:
- Kothapatnam Beach — an unspoiled beach rarely visited by foreign tourists, just a few kilometres from town, overlooking the Bay of Bengal.
- Cattle Market — one of the region's most important markets for the Ongole breed, reflecting the town's agricultural identity.
- Local Temples — several active Hindu temples in the town centre, notably dedicated to Shiva and Venkateswara.
History and Context
The Prakasam region was successively influenced by the Satavahanas, the Pallavas, and later the Vijayanagara. Ongole itself developed as a commercial and administrative centre during the British colonial period. Its name is inseparable from the Ongole cattle breed, selectively bred locally for centuries and recognised for its heat resistance and resilience to tropical diseases.
Highlights of a Visit
Kothapatnam Beach
This Bay of Bengal beach remains untouched by mass tourism. Colourful fishing nets and traditional boats make it a vibrant place in the early morning, when fishermen return with their catch.
Ongole Cattle Breed
Visiting the cattle market or nearby breeding farms helps explain why this zebu breed has been exported to Brazil, the United States, and Australia. It's living agricultural heritage, rarely featured in mainstream tourism circuits.
Photography Tips
