Dalhousie
Perched at 1,954 m in Himachal Pradesh, Dalhousie enchants with its cedar forests, colonial architecture and proximity to Khajjiar, India's 'Mini-Switzerland'.
Nestled in the heart of Himachal Pradesh, Dalhousie enchants visitors with its peaceful atmosphere and verdant landscapes. This small mountain station, founded during the British colonial era, retains a timeless charm. Between pine forests, panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and architecture inherited from the Raj, it offers a breath of cool mountain air far from the bustle of India's major cities.
History
The founding of Dalhousie dates back to 1854, when the English East India Company decided to develop a hill station as a place of rest for colonial soldiers and officials. The town's name honors James Dalhousie, the Governor-General of India at the time.
The hill station was built across five hills. Its cool and peaceful setting made it a favorite destination for the British seeking respite from the plains' scorching heat.
Following India's independence, Dalhousie experienced a period of decline. However, it gradually regained its luster and reemerged as an appreciated tourist destination, particularly among visitors from Punjab.
Moreover, following the Dalai Lama's exile in 1959, one of India's oldest Tibetan communities settled here. Today, this community is firmly established in the town and has developed a Tibetan school, a medical clinic, a craft center, Buddhist monasteries (such as Gyuto Monastery), as well as structures like the Central Tibetan Administration's office.
