Churu Fort
Churu Fort
Built in 1620 at the gates of the Thar Desert, Churu Fort preserves the memory of a famous siege and houses the Gopinath temple.
At the edge of the Thar Desert, Churu Fort overlooks a small town in Shekhawati, in northern Rajasthan. A 17th-century structure marked by a celebrated siege, it holds the memory of a singular military episode in which the defender, running short of ammunition, reportedly fired silver cannonballs. Its silhouette, its inner temple, and its frescoes make it a historical stop on the route between Mandawa and Bikaner.
Why visit Churu Fort
- A Rajput fort from 1620 with well-documented and tangible history, far from tourist reconstructions.
- The anecdote of the silver cannonballs from the 1814 siege, rooted in local memory.
- A complex that houses the Gopinath temple, founded by Shiv Singh.
- A useful stop to understand the Shekhawati region before heading to the Thar Desert.
History of the fort
The fort was erected in 1620 by Thakur Khushal Singh. It took the name Churu in tribute to Choru Jat, a Rajput from the Jangladesh region, whose memory is associated with the site.
The most striking episode is the 1814 siege. The fort was then the target of a premeditated attack led by Surat Singh of Bikaner. The resistance continued until ammunition ran out. According to local tradition, Thakur Khushal Singh refused to surrender and continued to fire at the attackers with silver cannonballs melted from the fort's reserves. This episode, transmitted through the oral memory of Shekhawati, is today the main narrative attached to the structure.
What to see
The fort displays a sober Rajasthani architectural style, with its thick walls, corner bastions, and reduced openings typical of desert fortresses. The interior preserves painted decoration: on the walls are scenes illustrating the stories of local heroes and military episodes, in the tradition of frescoes found in the havelis of the Shekhawati region.
The complex also houses the Gopinath temple, dedicated to Krishna and founded by Shiv Singh. It is an active place of worship, to be visited with discretion. Sculptures and interior paintings complement the ensemble and give an idea of the decorative refinement of Rajput lordly residences.
The visit is relatively short: plan about 1 hour to tour the fort and temple.

When to visit
Churu is on the edge of the Thar Desert, in an area with a semi-arid climate. Summers (April to June) are very hot, with temperatures frequently exceeding 40°C, and the July-August monsoon remains dry but uncomfortable. The cool season, from November to March, is by far the most pleasant time to visit the fort and explore Shekhawati. Winter mornings can be cool, so bring an extra layer.
How to get there
The fort is located in the center of Churu town, approximately one and a half to two hours' drive from Mandawa depending on the route taken.
- By air: the nearest international airport is Jaipur, about 3.5 hours' drive from Mandawa. It is connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and several other major Indian cities.
- By train: Churu itself has a railway station; Jhunjhunu station is another convenient entry point for exploring Shekhawati. The network serves Jaipur, Delhi, Bikaner, and several other towns in Rajasthan.
- By car: Churu is on the main road linking Delhi to Bikaner, making it a logical stop for those heading toward the Thar Desert.
