The spirit of travel
Get close to authentic Kerala with an exploration off the beaten path along its stunning roads and beaches. Enjoy the freedom of a carefully designed itinerary that allows you to stop at will, interact with local villagers and discover the region, known for its tropical vegetation, calm waters, spectacular wildlife reserves and tea and spice plantations.
We start with Kovalam with its sandy beaches and bustling markets, then we head towards the coast towards picturesque hills, cycling through the fishing villages of Varkala. It's a gentle ride to Kollam, the southern gateway to Kerala's backwaters - miles after miles of magnificently inward waterways lined with palm trees. We navigate this tranquil green world aboard wooden canoes from our base in Mancombu village, then we head inland, spice plantations, tea and rubber plantations to arrive at the charming destination of Erattupetta. Tempt yourself with a cycling hike before stopping at Periyar National Park to catch a glimpse of wild elephants, leopards and other rare animals before returning to the coast via Kuttikkanam. Delight in the thriving port city of Kochi during the last two days, with its colonial architecture and rich cultural heritage.

Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary

Arrival in Trivandrum and transfer to Kovalam
Upon our arrival atThiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), we will be greeted by our agency representative and then transferred to Kovalam, we are transferred to the hotel in Kovalam where we check in. Before beginning our cycling tour, we take time to relax and enjoy the view of the surroundings. Kovalam offers beautiful beaches, cafés and hotels located along the shoreline. We spend the night at the hotel.

Cycling in Kovalam
We start our day with a one-hour morning yoga session outside the hotel.
Later, after properly adjusting and setting up our bikes, we begin with a short relaxing ride through the fishing villages of Kovalam. We explore the region in the afternoon and spend wonderful time on the sandy beach of the Arabian Sea. We spend the evening in a beachside café and enjoy the view of the sea with the beautiful sunset and boats sailing in the distance.Kerala is very famous for its traditional plant-based medicine, so tourists can enjoy an Ayurvedic massage session (optional). Several ailments can be cured during a massage session, as different types of oils and herbs will be used. We extend our journey up to 35 km passing through fishing villages and a beautiful coastal road.

Let's head towards Varkala while visiting Veli Lagoon on the way
From Veli, we continue by bike towards the estuary. The lagoon, which is a shallow body of water separated from the ocean, welcomes several fishermen on boats that we can observe lowering their nets. We visit the fishing village of Anjuthengu and we stop at the Fort of Anjengo, the first British trading post established on the Malabar coast, built in the 17th century by the British East India Company. Later, we head towards Varkala, a coastal town with many temples. It is a famous pilgrimage site where thousands of Hindus come to pray at the Janardhanaswamy Temple. Varkala attracts many hikers and tourists from around the world drawn by its magnificent cliff overlooking the coast and the serene atmosphere of the town. Upon arriving in Varkala, we enjoy the beautiful fine sand beaches of the Arabian coast and the splendid sunset, followed by a delicious dinner at a restaurant in town. For this day, we covered a distance of approximately 36 km.

Pedaling through Keralian villages in Kollam
Today, we cross stunning blue lagoons lined with palm tree avenues. During the journey, we visit a few villages to discover the traditional art of coir transformation (coconut fibers, which are used to make carpets and mats) and fishing. Kollam is located on Ashtamudi Lake, on the southwest coast of India, bordering the Laccadive Sea to the west and surrounded by coconut trees and cashew nut plantations. Kollam is also known for its cashew nut production industry. The houses found in Kollam are typically built in wood from the Kerala style and are all located at the southern end of the backwaters. This makes the city of Kollam an ideal place to explore canals and lagoons.

Boat ride in Kollam and cycle at Mankombu
Upon arriving at Kollam Jetty, we begin our bike ride heading south, following coastal roads in the shade of palm trees for 16 km. We cross a river on board boats that will carry our bicycles. Today, our bike tour covers a distance of approximately 22 km. Later, we visit The Manarasala Serpent Temple by bus, near Thottappally station. After visiting the temple, we enjoy a good traditional lunch served in a family restaurant, with food served on banana leaves. After lunch, we explore the surroundings on board a motorized boat passing through the backwaters to the residence where we are staying. It takes a few hours but it's the best way to explore these waterways, which extend over 1900 square kilometers. The boat is an integral part of the daily life of villagers who use it as a means of transport but also as a means of delivery for mail, harvests and other goods. Soon our boat rides come to an end and we head to the guesthouse, in the old trading town of Alleppey. We spend the night in the village in the traditional way. We experience something unique by interacting with villagers while discovering their culture, their cuisine and their daily life. Most houses have guest rooms, and some also have private bathrooms. The rooms are quite simple and offer double beds.

Cycling in the Backwater Villages
After breakfast, today we have the opportunity to discover the surroundings. During our cycling tour, we take time to meet the villagers and we stop to visit churches and temples. In the evening, we enjoy a canoe cruise under the moonlight, accompanied by the traditional songs of the inhabitants. The villagers live from agriculture by growing vegetables, and by raising cows, pigs and chickens.

Pedalling in Erattupetta
Our day will combine cycling and driving to reach our destination and leave behind the magnificent landscapes we discovered. Erattupetta is well known for its rubber production since the 19th century. The weather becomes slightly cooler and we continue to pedal in the shade of rubber trees. As we stay with a local family, we have the opportunity to learn more about traditional food and the importance of curry. We begin a long walk through nature across the gardens and swim in a natural pool. The farmers' lodges are composed of two floors, a well-appointed and comfortable house. Most rooms do not have air conditioning, but they are bright and quite spacious. The houses are surrounded by lush gardens with rubber trees that shelter many birds that can be observed. (Ascent: 636 m; Descent: 628 m) (Cycling 35 Km / 4.5 h)

Local exploration of Erattupetta
In the morning, we take a walk through the fields and discover the different types of fruits and medicinal plants. In the afternoon, we bathe in a pool surrounded by natural rocks. We then head off to visit Poonjar Palace (residence of the Maharaja and his family), which was abandoned 900 years ago by the royal family. We also have the opportunity to visit the town center.

Cycling at Periyar (Thekkady)
Erattupetta → Periyar (Thekkady)
Today, we take steep roads by car before starting the cycling tour to Thekkady. Our cycling circuit passes through Wagamon and we enjoy the cool weather, tea fields and hilly region. Our cycling itinerary includes many rubber plantations and spice gardens. Later, we meet tea pickers in the fields and discover the beauty of the region. Thekkady offers many spice shops and travelers from around the world come here to buy from them. This is why Thekkady is nicknamed the spice center of Kerala. A delicious Aroma fragrance floats in the air of Thekkady, also known for its cardamom hills. At the end of the day, we head to Connemara tea factory

The Trek in Periyar National Park
This morning, we begin with a "walk" in search of wild animals such as elephants, Indian bison, flying squirrels, turtles, porcupines and many bird species. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is also known as the Periyar Tiger Reserve. There are indeed around 40 Tigers living in the wild in the 925 km² of the park. Visiting the park is a true exploration in the heart of nature that fascinates us with its peaceful atmosphere and helps us relax after our busy days. Periyar's wildlife is well known for its rich fauna and flora where you can also see teak, rosewood, sandalwood, mangoes, tamarinds, banyans, bamboo, etc. (no cycling walk for today).

Return to Cochin (Kochi)
Periyar (Thekkady) → Kuttikkanam
This morning, we will enjoy a bike tour over a distance of 30 kms. We take a very beautiful road to Kuttikkanam.
We continue our bus journey to Kochi Port (Kochi port is one of the largest ports in India). From the British era, the city Kochi has been influenced by Portuguese, Dutch and English style, it is also famous for its kathakali dancers. You can find many kathakali dance centers in the region. These dancers take approximately 3 to 4 hours to paint their faces. These describe the events of Ramayana and Mahabharata, an Indian epic.

Explore Kochi by cycle and an evening boat cruise
Today, we explore the old town of Kochi by bike. Kochi was a fishing village in Kerala in pre-colonial times. Due to the arrival of the Chinese, Arabs and Phoenicians in the second millennium BC, European links strengthened in the 16th century and the Portuguese, Dutch and English gradually settled there. After visiting the old town of Kochi, we enjoy a cruise around the island while admiring the beautiful sunset. In the morning, we take a bike ride on a 25 km route and then visit Fort Kochi.

Departure from Cochin (Kochi)
This morning, our tour ends here, at Kochi and we have breakfast at the hotel depending on our flight times.

The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn or altered pages).
Tourist Visa – e-Visa (Tourist eVisa)
Nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland and Canada must be in possession of a valid visa to enter India. There is no visa exemption for a tourist stay.
The most common solution is the Tourist eVisa, available online on the official Indian government portal. It is available for several durations:
Tourist eVisa 30 days (double entry),
Tourist eVisa 1 year (multiple entries, maximum stay of 90 days per visit),
Tourist eVisa 5 years (multiple entries, maximum stay of 90 days per visit).
The application must be submitted online at least 4 days before your arrival date and at most 120 days before. The eVisa is linked to your passport and is available only at certain designated airports and ports of entry.
Arrival and Immigration
When passing through immigration, Indian authorities may ask for:
confirmation of your eVisa (printed document or digital version),
an exit ticket from the territory (return flight or onward journey),
proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay,
the address of your first accommodation in India.
Health and Vaccinations
No vaccine is officially mandatory to enter India from the EEA, Switzerland or Canada, except in the case of transit through a country at risk of yellow fever (a yellow fever vaccination certificate will then be required).
As a preventive measure, health authorities generally recommend the following vaccinations:
hepatitis A and hepatitis B,
typhoid,
tetanus-poliomyelitis,
rabies (depending on planned activities),
Japanese encephalitis (depending on regions and length of stay).
Antimalarial treatment may be recommended depending on the regions you visit and the time of year. Consult a doctor or international vaccination center before your departure.
Traveling with Children
Minors must be holders of their own valid passport and their own eVisa covering the duration of the stay.
In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an exit authorization from the territory may be required according to the regulations of their country of residence.
