Erattupetta
Erattupetta, a small town in Kottayam district, Kerala, opens the door to spice plantations and the Vagamon plateau. An authentic stop between backwaters and highlands.
Erattupetta is a small town in Kottayam district, in the heart of Kerala, nestled in the foothills of the Western Ghats. A crossroads between cardamom and tea plantations of the highlands and the backwaters of the lowlands, it serves as a base for exploring the Vagamon region and Mundakayam forests. Less frequented than Munnar or Thekkady, it offers an authentic gateway to the lush hill landscapes of inland Kerala.
What to see
The town itself is a lively market town, a transit point between Kottayam and the mountain stations. The immediate surroundings contain most of the attractions:
- Cardamom and pepper plantations: the hills around Erattupetta are covered with spice crops, visitable on foot or by jeep.
- Mundakayam forests: a wooded area to the south, habitat for birds and small mammals, popular for short treks.
- Access to Vagamon: the rolling meadows and cliffs of Vagamon are accessible from Erattupetta, which is one of the gateways to this plateau.
- Meenachil River: the river flows through the region and offers peaceful scenery, typical of rural Kerala.
History and context
Erattupetta developed as an agricultural trading centre serving planter communities established in the hills in the 19th century, driven by the colonisation of Kerala's highlands. The name literally means "two bridges" in Malayalam, a reference to ancient passages over the local river. Today, the region remains dominated by the spice and rubber economy.
Highlights of a visit
The spice plantations

The road to Vagamon
The road climbing from Erattupetta to the Vagamon plateau passes through landscapes of wooded hills and small villages. The journey itself is worth the detour, especially early in the morning when mist covers the valleys.
The local market
Erattupetta's market reflects the agricultural life of the region: fresh spices, hill vegetables and local Kerala produce rub shoulders in an atmosphere untainted by tourist staging.
