The spirit of travel

Located between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, Kerala captivates with the diversity of its landscapes: palm-fringed beaches of Kovalam, Munnar hills, ramparts of Kumarakom and forests of Thekkady. Ranked by National Geographic Traveler among the 50 must-see destinations in the world, it offers emerald rice paddies, cardamom plantations and lush forests of the Ghats.

The journey begins in Cochin, a former colonial trading post with remarkable architecture, before heading to Munnar and its high-altitude tea plantations. A five-day trek leads to the summit of Meesapulimala (2,640 m), the highest peak in the region, passing through Madurai and its Sri Meenakshi temple with its sculpted towers. Back in the Kerala hills, a stop at Periyar allows you to observe wild elephants. The stay ends on the coast, between the Alleppey canals and the white sandy beaches of Kovalam.

Traditional welcome upon arrival

Arrival at the international airport of Cochin. After the traditional 'Swagat' welcome, we are transferred to the hotel for check-in.  Cochin has a historical past in maritime trade with the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe; and its cosmopolitan past is reflected in the buildings and structures, thus representing the different facets of the world: a blend of Portuguese, Dutch and British influences.

On the way to the beautiful mountain resort Munnar

Cochin (Kochi)Munnar

3h40130 km

In accordance with our itinerary, we visit the Fort of Kochi. This edifice was founded by the Portuguese in 1503, which is surely the first European colony to have settled in Inde. Our visit will take place according to the aromas of teas and spices, discovering colorful warehouses, aged bicycles and hand-painted trucks filled with merchandise, as well as food stands present in every corner.
In the afternoon, we visit the Mattancherry Palace, built by the Portuguese as a gift for the Raja of Kochi. A visit to the 16th century Jewish synagogue is also on the agenda, as well as a detour to the Saint-François Church - the resting place of the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. We explore the city of Kochi, its bazaars and the old port area.
Then, we move away from the coastal plains towards Munnar, located in the Western Ghats, approximately 1,600 meters above sea level. Once a beautiful hill station of the British administration, it has retained its colonial charm. It is also known for its tea plantations. The town is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams Mudrapauzha, Naliathani and Kundala. With its undulating hills, sparkling waterfalls, tea plantations and picture-postcard hamlets, the region is ideal for peaceful hiking. Upon arrival, we are transferred to our hotel.

We are transferred to Silent Valley from where we begin the trek with moderate stages that wind through the tea plantation plains followed by a gentle ascent to the natural wild grasslands that climb up to the ridges, crossing the sholas with stunning views of the tea plantations around us. Continuing our trek after a good lunch, we descend to our first stop where we will set up camp near a stream for two nights.

Trekking to Meesapulimala

After breakfast, we embark on a half-day hike to Meesapulimala peak (2,630 m), the highest point in the region and the second highest summit in Inde after Anamudi, which is located in a more restricted area. From the camp, the trail climbs through rough grasslands to open ridges. We also traverse beautiful meadows typical of mountainous regions. We will soon reach the summit. Our efforts are rewarded by breathtaking views from Kerala. At the summit, we enjoy breathtaking views. We reach the border between the two states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It takes us approximately 2-3 hours to reach the summit and after a short break at the top, we descend to our camp for a late lunch and a free afternoon.

Silent Valley Trek to Summit Station

This relatively longer day offers a trek through the plateaus of the Ghats Western, magnified by red Rhododendron plantations, which enhance the beauty of the entire region. This plateau is the habitat of many endemic species of flora and fauna such as wild goats and wild boars. Passing by the highest peaks of tea plantations, we cross authentic villages where we can interact with friendly inhabitants.

Another long day of trekking ahead. We cross coffee plantations, dense forests and cotton plantations to reach the central station. The land is much richer and more fertile in Tamil Nadu. The final section of our trek takes us through coconut and mango plantations and ends near the village of Mundhan.

A journey through the most fascinating city of Tamil Nadu

MundhanMadurai

3h120 km

After breakfast, we leave Kerala to cross the plains to reach the colorful city of Madurai, famous for its temples.

The rest of the day is free to explore the city. Madurai is one of the oldest and most fascinating cities of Tamil Nadu. It is also a cultural center that thrives thanks to its rich heritage and history. Its great temple Meenakshi Amman - Temple of Sri Meenakshi Sundarewarar, built during the Nayak period between the 16th and 18th centuries, is at the heart of the city and is one of the largest temple complexes in India.

The five gopurams surrounding the temple are known for their stucco work. The southern gopuram is the tallest, measuring 48.8 m high. Worshippers bathe in the Golden Lily tank and crowd into The Hall of a Thousand Pillars, both finely decorated. Madurai is the ideal place to stroll and discover Hindu culture.

On the way to Kovalam

After a relaxing breakfast on the houseboat, we disembark to head to Kovalam. Kovalam is an extremely popular beach resort due to its shallow waters and low tide waves. It offers diverse activities for all tastes. A huge rocky headland is located on the beach forming a magnificent bay, ideal for some peaceful swimming moments. The beaches are backed by headlands dotted with coconut trees. The southernmost part of the beach, where the lighthouse is located, is the most beautiful. The information below applies to travelers who are nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and Canada traveling to India for a tourist stay. Entry rules may evolve, so we recommend that you verify the information with the official authorities before your departure.

Passport

To enter India, your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into the country and contain at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn or altered pages).

Tourist Visa – e-Visa (Tourist eVisa)

Nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland and Canada must be in possession of a valid visa to enter India. There is no visa exemption for a tourist stay.

The most common solution is the Tourist eVisa, available online on the official Indian government portal. It is available for several durations:

  • Tourist eVisa 30 days (double entry),

  • Tourist eVisa 1 year (multiple entries, maximum stay of 90 days per visit),

  • Tourist eVisa 5 years (multiple entries, maximum stay of 90 days per visit).

The application must be submitted online at least 4 days before your arrival date and at most 120 days before. The eVisa is linked to your passport and is available only at certain designated airports and ports of entry.

Arrival and Immigration

When passing through immigration, Indian authorities may ask for:

  • confirmation of your eVisa (printed document or digital version),

  • an exit ticket from the territory (return flight or onward journey),

  • proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay,

  • the address of your first accommodation in India.

Health and Vaccinations

No vaccine is officially mandatory to enter India from the EEA, Switzerland or Canada, except in the case of transit through a country at risk of yellow fever (a yellow fever vaccination certificate will then be required).

As a preventive measure, health authorities generally recommend the following vaccinations:

  • hepatitis A and hepatitis B,

  • typhoid,

  • tetanus-poliomyelitis,

  • rabies (depending on planned activities),

  • Japanese encephalitis (depending on regions and length of stay).

Antimalarial treatment may be recommended depending on the regions you visit and the time of year. Consult a doctor or international vaccination center before your departure.

Traveling with Children

Minors must be holders of their own valid passport and their own eVisa covering the duration of the stay.

In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an exit authorization from the territory may be required according to the regulations of their country of residence.

Other Nationalities

Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Travelers concerned should inquire with the Indian embassy or consulate in their country of residence.
