Chettinad, in the heart of South Tamil Nadu, unveils 96 villages, palatial Chettiar mansions, sacred temples and gastronomy renowned across India.

Chettinad stands apart from other Indian cities. This town represents the prosperous community of the Subcontinent. Its inhabitants work primarily in business and banking. Beautiful residences and opulent temples dot the city, which is also renowned for its cuisine.

History of Chettinad

Located in the south of Tamil Nadu State, specifically in Sivaganga district, Chettinad had Karaikudi as its capital. Previously, the region was inhabited by the Nattukottai Chettiar community, comprising numerous emigrants from South Asia, Sri Lanka and Burma. Chettinad distinguished itself particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, elevating the cultural and historical values of central Tamil Nadu.

The city of Chettinad developed in the 13th century, when a major flood forced inhabitants of Cauvery Poompattinam to leave their ancestral lands and expand the city by creating 96 new villages in the surrounding areas. These emigrants were predominantly merchants and traders in precious stones, jewels and textile products. In little time, Chettinad experienced economic growth and strengthened activities in banking and finance.

By the 19th century, Chettinad's inhabitants already controlled a large portion of India's banking economy. They began erecting palaces and grand buildings thanks to revenues from their commercial ventures across Asia. Buildings of the era distinguished themselves by their faded white façades.

Visiting Chettinad

Chettinad is known as the cradle of the Chettiars, from whom it inherited numerous palatial mansions. Through their commercial activities, the city's inhabitants adopted a lifestyle marked by travel and a taste for luxury.

Architecture enthusiasts particularly appreciate Chettinad for its typical mansions, built according to Vastu Shastra principles. All Chettiar residences feature particular orientation and functional organization. Their courtyards and halls form a longitudinal axis. Entrances and verandas are entirely made of marble. Reception rooms must have wooden frames and sculpted pillars, much like Dravidian temples.

Strolling through the city's streets, discover the meticulous craftsmanship of the Chettiars in the planning and construction of buildings. The locals championed urban development by planning orthogonal streets and introducing technical innovations. Nevertheless, several ancient buildings still stand proudly in the city.

The Brihadisvara Temple located in Tanjore dates from the 10th century. This monastery dedicated to Shiva Rudra preserves the symbols of Chola art. It is surrounded by an enclosure wall covered with Nandi. During your visit, notice the inscription base in Kannada script, as well as sculpted panels depicting the adventures of the gods.

Another historic monument to discover in Chettinad, the Athmanathaswamy Temple was founded by Manickavasagar. It houses a statue illustrating a tree and Lord Shiva advising Manickavasagar. Lord Shiva is represented here as Athmanatha Swamy and Yogambal, without precise form. Attend the ceremonies of offerings of boiled rice with bitter gourds and spinach to the deity (the steam emanating from this food must reach the statue).

For an afternoon, treat yourself to an ox-cart ride through the suburbs. It's an original way to discover the landscapes and contemplate the sunset. Alternatively, organize a small cycling excursion.
