History
Vedanthangal literally means "hunter's hamlet." Covering approximately 30 hectares today, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary was once a hunting ground for local communities. The region attracted a wide variety of birds thanks to small lakes that provided feeding grounds.
This natural area was preserved by local populations for more than 250 years. In early 1936, the site was officially notified as a bird sanctuary. In 1962, it legally received the status of Vedanthangal Forest Reserve. That said, it wasn't until ten years later that the area was declared a wildlife sanctuary by the government.

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary ranks among Tamil Nadu's renowned tourist attractions. On site, visitors, who arrive in large numbers each year, delight in escaping into untamed nature.
Spanning 30 hectares, Vedanthangal Reserve stands among India's oldest bird sanctuaries. It also displays the country's largest variety of avifauna species. Discover storks, egrets, open-billed storks, great cormorants, painted storks, Eurasian spoonbills, black-headed ibis, grey herons, darters, pintails, cuckoos, eagles, anhinga, and many more.
Beyond birds, the site counts among its residents mammals such as jackals, jungle cats, wild boar, monkeys, and black-naped hares.
Best Time to Visit the Sanctuary
The ideal time to visit the sanctuary spans from November through March. During this period, the climate is pleasant. It is also the nesting season for most migratory birds.
Opening Hours and Entry Fees
Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary welcomes visitors seven days a week, from 6 AM to 6 PM. Entry fees are as follows:
- Adults: 25 Rs
- Children aged 3 to 12: 5 Rs
- Still cameras: 25 Rs
- Video cameras: 150 Rs
- Parking fee: 10 Rs
How to Get There?
By air, the nearest airport to Vedanthangal Sanctuary is Chennai, approximately 58 km from the site. From the airport, allow about 1.5 hours of driving to reach the reserve.
For train travelers, the nearest railway station is Kanchipuram Station, located 15 km from the sanctuary. Buses and private taxis await you at the station.
If you plan to drive, take NH45 until Padalam Junction, then turn right onto the road leading to the sanctuary. From there, you need only travel 11 km more to reach the reserve's entrance.
