Kovalam was a virtually unknown fishing village until the 1970s, when Western travelers—drawn by Goa's hippie scene—discovered its beaches. Kerala Tourism subsequently made it a flagship destination. The nearby port of Vizhinjam, now developing as a major deepwater harbor, reminds us that the region remains rooted in an ancient maritime economy.

Dozens of centers offer therapies—from a one-hour Abhyanga massage to Panchakarma over several weeks. Prefer establishments affiliated with licensed doctors (BAMS) rather than beach-side offerings without certification.

The lighthouse is open to the public at certain times; interior stairs lead to a platform from which you can see all three beaches at once. Check opening hours on site—they vary by season.

A few minutes' walk to the south, Vizhinjam port comes alive early in the morning when boats return. Tuna, mackerel, giant shrimp—catches are sold directly on the quay.

Photography tips

Morning light is soft on Samudra Beach, still uncrowded at that hour. For the lighthouse, come late afternoon: the white and red facade stands out well against the orange sky. Avoid flash in fishing areas—always ask permission before photographing fishermen closely.

Kovalam is located at the southwestern tip of Kerala, approximately 15 km from Thiruvananthapuram airport and about thirty kilometers from the city center. Local buses regularly serve the resort from Thiruvananthapuram's depot. Tuk-tuks and taxis are available on site for getting around between beaches. Wheelchair access remains difficult on the beaches themselves due to sand and rocks.
