Hingolgadh is a small village and natural region located near Jasdan, approximately 1.5 hours from the city of Rajkot, in the Indian state of Gujarat. The destination is primarily known for the Hingolgadh Nature Education Sanctuary, a biodiversity haven that shelters both plants typical of semi-arid zones and animals such as peacocks and antelopes.

History

The village of Hingolgadh lies in the Jasdan taluka, within Rajkot district, in the Saurashtra region. Before India's independence, this area was part of the Princely State of Jasdan, governed by the Kathi Kshatriya dynasty. Hingolgadh therefore fell under the direct influence of this principality.

The territory where Hingolgadh sanctuary now stands was once known as Motisari Vidi, a name that underscores the location's distinct identity even before its integration into the princely domain. At that time, the zone served the sovereigns for royal hunting, as well as for the collection of fodder and grass for livestock.

The Hingolgadh Fort stands as the most striking testament to this princely past. Built, according to some sources, as far back as the 15th century, it served as a residence and local base for the rulers of the Kathi Khachar dynasty of Jasdan. Figures such as Ala Chela Khachar are believed to have dwelled here.

Following the end of the princely era, Hingolgadh underwent a new chapter. In 1973, the territory was declared a private forest attached to the former royal estate. A few years later, in 1980, it was officially designated a wildlife sanctuary, highlighting its ecological significance.

In 1984, management of the site was entrusted to the GEER Foundation (Gujarat Ecological Education and Research). Since then, Hingolgadh has transcended its historical role: it has evolved into an environmental education centre, where biodiversity protection intertwines with visitor awareness.

What to Do at Hingolgadh

1. Explore the Hingolgadh Nature Education Sanctuary

The sanctuary spans nearly 654 hectares. You will find diverse flora, including over 400 plant species, notably cacti, thorny shrubs, medicinal plants, and arid trees typical of Saurashtra's semi-arid region.

Fauna is equally rich: the sanctuary is home to chinkaras (Indian gazelles), nilgais (blue antelopes), foxes, hedgehogs, mongooses, and more than 230 bird species, among which the peacock—India's national emblem—takes pride of place.

During the monsoon, the hills don the verdant blanket and attract numerous migratory animals and birds. Well-maintained trails enable you to explore the reserve safely. The GEER Foundation regularly organises educational camps and guided tours to raise awareness about biodiversity conservation.

2. Discover Hingolgadh Fort

Perched atop a hill, the fort commands the landscape and offers panoramic vistas over the Jasdan plain. It blends defensive architecture with residential elements.

Inside, you will discover grand halls, secret passages, and an old prison. Several chambers now serve as a museum recounting princely life and local traditions. Collections of royal artefacts—furniture, tableware, weapons, and ornaments—are on display.

Hingolgadh Fort is also an excellent vantage point for observing the surrounding sanctuary.

3. Birdwatch and Immerse Yourself in Nature

Hingolgadh stands among Gujarat's finest birdwatching destinations. Between November and February, numerous migratory species from Central Asia and Europe make their way through the region. With some luck, you may spot the hoopoe, the white-rumped swift, majestic raptors such as the golden eagle, as well as a rich variety of colourful songbirds.

The site is equally a paradise for photography enthusiasts: the soft light of dawn and dusk creates ideal conditions for capturing wildlife and landscapes. Even outside the migration season, Hingolgadh remains captivating, with peacocks unfurling their magnificent plumage and gazelles roaming freely across the grasslands.

4. Explore Jasdan and Its Surroundings

The town of Jasdan complements a visit to Hingolgadh. Once the historic centre of the Jasdan Princely State, it preserves traces of its royal past, notably the Jasdan Fort.

The town is also renowned for its handicrafts (decorative objects, traditional textiles, and more) and its bustling local markets. You can savour Gujarati cuisine, visit Hindu temples, or join in local celebrations, such as Navratri, celebrated with vibrant Garba dancing.

Moreover, the Jasdan surroundings are dotted with water bodies and small lakes ideal for walks or moments of repose in a natural setting.

Hingolgadh is located approximately 1.5 hours by road from Rajkot (roughly 70 km).

• By road: the simplest way to reach the village is to hire a vehicle or take a taxi from Rajkot. Local buses also connect Rajkot to Jasdan, though transport can be lengthier and less comfortable.
• From Ahmedabad: allow approximately 4 hours of driving (around 182 km) to reach Hingolgadh.
• By air: the nearest airport is at Rajkot, with connections to Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and other major Indian cities.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Hingolgadh runs from October to March, when the climate is mild and migratory birds abound. Summer is intensely hot and dry, whilst the monsoon, though verdant, can complicate travel.
