History
Cheruthuruthi, also known as Vallathol Nagar, developed around a major institution: the Kerala Kalamandalam. Originally founded in 1930 by poet Vallathol Narayana Menon (with Mukunda Raja), it was relocated to Cheruthuruthi in 1936 thanks to a donation from the Maharaja of Cochin. The objective was to preserve and promote traditional arts such as Kathakali, Mohiniyattam and Koodiyattam, which were then at risk of disappearing.
Cheruthuruthi Today
Today, Cheruthuruthi is a haven of living traditions dedicated to the practice and dissemination of Kerala's arts. Kerala Kalamandalam continues to attract students and artists, as well as visitors coming to witness authentic demonstrations and performances. The calm, respectful atmosphere invites deep exploration of local traditions. The Vallathol Museum, housed in the poet's former residence, enriches the experience.
