History
The name "Auli," derived from the Garwhali term meaning "meadow," reflects the natural beauty of this mountainous region dotted with vast grassy expanses. Since the 18th century, this place has held profound spiritual significance, notably through the illustrious philosopher Adi Shankaracharya Ji, who founded the Jyotir Math monastery in Joshimath, not far from Auli. This foundation marked the beginning of the region's renown, which was also nicknamed the "Gateway to the Himalayas." Through the centuries, semi-nomadic tribes such as Tibetans, Mongols, and Bhotyias used these trails for their commercial exchanges with Tibet, crossing the snow-covered mountains with the help of their horses and long-haired yaks.
Auli also played a strategic role in modern history, particularly during the 1962 Sino-Indian War when the border region witnessed numerous confrontations. Following this event, a cable car was constructed in 1993 to connect the town to Joshimath and boost tourism.
