Along the banks of the Indus, Alchi is home to one of Ladakh's oldest monasteries, renowned for its thousand-year-old frescoes inspired by Kashmiri artistry.
Located approximately 70 km west of Leh district, the village of Alchi nestles along the banks of the Indus River. The verdant landscape of this region renders it undeniably resplendent. The area is marked primarily by Islamic, Hindu, and Buddhist traditions. During a journey through Ladakh, Alchi makes for a perfect brief stop.
History
The village of Alchi is renowned for housing one of the region's oldest monasteries, more commonly known as the monastic complex. This monastery was constructed by the scholar-translator Rinchen Zangpo around the 10th century.
In the 10th century, King Yeshe Od of Guge dispatched 21 scholars to this region to spread Buddhism. Given the area's harsh climatic conditions, only two of these scholars survived, among them Rinchen Zangpo. He went on to build 108 monasteries throughout the region as part of the expansion of Buddhist teachings.
Today
The village's main attraction is the Alchi Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries of Ladakh. It is situated on the banks of the Indus River. Its complex comprises three principal temples: Du-khang, Sum-Tsek, and Manjushri. Impressive stupas also rise before the monastery.
In the surrounding area, it is possible to travel along the Indus River by boat. This escapade offers the opportunity to admire the beauty of nature. Depending on the season, one can observe river dolphins. Other activities are also available, such as kayaking or diving. If you opt for a walking tour along the banks, you'll have the chance to observe various bird species.
Venturing slightly beyond the village, it may be worthwhile to stop at the Likir Monastery, the Rizong Monastery, and the Jelichun Convent, located approximately 8 km from Alchi.
Climate
Climatic conditions vary considerably depending on the season. Summers are mild during the day, but temperatures drop significantly at night. Temperatures range between 12°C and 25°C. Winters are quite harsh.
The ideal period to visit the village of Alchi falls between June and September.

The nearest airport to the village is Leh Kushok Rinpoché Airport. Regular flights operate to Delhi, Jammu, Pune, and Srinagar. The major airlines offering world-class facilities are Air India, Jet Airways, and Go Air.
By Rail
Alchi is close to the railway stations of Dehra Doon and Chandigarh. Trains regularly service various regions of the country.
By Road
Alchi is situated 70 km from the city of Leh. Taxis regularly service the village, and buses are available.
The village of Alchi is quite small. It is easily possible to explore it on foot.
