Nature & Escape

Mountain resort at Auli, above Joshimath, with integrated ski school and direct views of the Central Himalayan peaks.

Auli Resort occupies one of India's highest ski stations, on the Himalayan slopes above Joshimath, in Uttarakhand. The property combines an integrated ski school, a panoramic terrace and an in-house restaurant, set within high-altitude meadows (the bugyals) edged by snow-capped summits.

Why stay here

Auli Resort stands out for its direct location on the Auli ski domain, above 2,500 metres, facing the Garhwal Himalayan ranges. Three elements structure the experience:

  • An on-site ski school, convenient in winter for beginners and skiers looking to progress without transfer logistics.
  • A well-positioned terrace, facing the summits, ideal for observing morning light on the ridges.
  • An integrated restaurant, which simplifies meals in an area where outdoor options are limited outside season.

Atmosphere and accommodation

The atmosphere is that of a classic mountain resort, oriented towards skiing in winter and hiking in the green season. Rooms are equipped with private bathrooms and televisions. Reception operates 24/7, which facilitates late arrivals after a long day's drive from the plains.

In summer, the scenery transforms dramatically: the snow-covered slopes give way to bugyals, the grassy meadows characteristic of the Central Himalaya, suited to short walks along the edge of the ski domain.

Practical facilities

  • On-site restaurant
  • Ski school (winter season)
  • Panoramic terrace
  • Free private parking
  • 24/7 reception
  • Rooms with private bathrooms and television

Location

The resort sits in the Auli sector, accessible from Joshimath, the last garrison town before the high valley. Joshimath serves as a logistics hub for pilgrimages to Badrinath and treks to the Valley of Flowers. Allow several hours' drive from Rishikesh or Haridwar, along a winding mountain road — a cable car also connects Joshimath to Auli in season.

When to visit

Two windows emerge depending on your planned activities:

  • December to March: optimal snow cover, ski domain open, winter landscapes. Pack warm clothing; temperatures drop well below freezing at night.
  • May to June and September to October: green meadows, clear skies over the summits, mild daytime temperatures. Period suited to hiking and observing the Nanda Devi ranges.

The monsoon (July–August) should be avoided due to risk of landslides on the access road.

What to see nearby

  • Joshimath: Adi Shankaracharya monastery, one of four founding maths of Hinduism.
  • Badrinath: major sanctuary on the Char Dham circuit, accessible in season.
  • Valley of Flowers (national park, UNESCO-listed): alpine bloom between July and September.
  • Tapovan: natural hot springs nearby.

Extend your journey in India

Auli fits into a Himalayan itinerary, but India lends itself equally to highly contrasting stays. For a cultural tour in Rajasthan, Ranthambore Heritage Haveli combines safari with Mughal heritage. On the hill station side, Woodville Palace Hotel in Shimla extends the mountain spirit in a more historical setting. For a tropical contrast, Red Earth in the south offers another perspective on the country.
