Charm & Character

A Rajasthani haveli dating from 1892, transformed into a 45-room heritage hotel, still managed by the Alsisar family in the heart of Jaipur.

Built in 1892 as a secondary residence for the Thakurs of Alsisar during their stays in Jaipur, Alsisar Haveli is today a 45-room heritage hotel, still managed by the founding family. Its original Rajput architecture, its Sheesh Mahal and its Darbar Hall make it a characterful address in the heart of Rajasthan's capital.

Why stay at Alsisar Haveli

This 19th-century Rajasthani residence was restored and transformed into a hotel in 1994, without departing from its original identity. The Alsisar family, descendants of the Kachawa clan of Rajputs — and more specifically of the Shekhawat sub-clan founded by Maharao Shekhaji, whose name gave its name to the Shekhawati region (Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Churu and Jaipur) — still oversees its operation. You stay, therefore, in a family home, where the history of the place is documented and embodied by its owners.

The address is particularly suited to travellers seeking a heritage stop in Jaipur rather than a standardised international hotel.

Atmosphere and architecture

The building preserves the codes of Rajput architecture: interior courtyards, alcoves, stained glass windows, painted frescoes. The centrepiece remains the Sheesh Mahal, a mirror and fresco-adorned hall that once served as a venue for private receptions. On the upper floors, hand-painted ceilings and ornamental details remain in place — the hotel has no lift, which is explained by the haveli's original structure and limits heavy alterations.

The whole place breathes the atmosphere of an inhabited residence rather than a reconstructed hotel: antique furniture, traditional fabrics, and service provided by staff familiar with the place.

The rooms

Alsisar Haveli has 45 rooms, all decorated in Rajput heritage style. The rooms are furnished with carved four-poster beds, traditional fabrics and antique furniture. On the upper floors, you will find the original painted ceilings that give character to the most sought-after rooms.

Categories range from standard rooms to the Maharaja suite. Note: the absence of a lift means you will need to climb the stairs to reach the upper floors, a point to bear in mind if you are travelling with heavy luggage or have reduced mobility.

Dining and services

The restaurant occupies the Darbar Hall, the former reception hall of nobles, with its high ceilings and crystal chandeliers. The cuisine emphasises dishes from northern India — meat and vegetable curries, lentils, parathas, clay-oven breads — complemented by an international menu. Breakfast is served buffet-style with eggs to order, fresh fruit and Indian specialities.

Facilities include: swimming pool, massage service, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, room service and 24-hour assistance.

Location

The hotel is located on Sansar Chandra Road, Jaipur 302001, in a central neighbourhood. City Palace is 2.5 km away, Hawa Mahal and Albert Hall Museum are less than 3 km away, and Amber Fort is about 10 km away. Jaipur Sanganer Airport is 13 km away; allow about thirty minutes by taxi depending on city traffic.

What to see in the surroundings

From Jaipur, several sites in eastern Rajasthan are accessible as day trips or stopovers:

  • Abhaneri: the stepwell of Chand Baori and the Harshat Mata temple.
  • Bhangarh: the ruins of the 16th-century fort-city, abandoned and surrounded by local lore.
  • Pushkar: a holy city centred around its lake, famous for its ghats and one of the rare temples dedicated to Brahma.
  • Ranthambore and Sariska: Bengal tiger reserves in the Aravalli hills.
  • Keoladeo: a former hunting reserve turned bird sanctuary, a Unesco-listed site.

To extend your Rajasthan itinerary, a stop at Ranthambore Heritage Haveli allows you to continue with a tiger safari. Further south, Ahilya Fort in Maheshwar offers another family-run heritage address.
