·
Charm & Character

Former stronghold of the Holkars commanding the Narmada at Maheshwar, Ahilya Fort offers 19 rooms within six 18th-century buildings set amid gardens.

Perched atop a hill overlooking the Narmada River, Ahilya Fort occupies the former residence of the Holkars, the dynasty that ruled Indore. The property, transformed into a character-filled retreat, retains its 18th-century architecture and princely atmosphere, well removed from the beaten tourist paths of Madhya Pradesh.

Why stay at Ahilya Fort

  • A historic fort managed by the Holkar royal family, descendants of Indore's sovereigns
  • 19 rooms distributed across six period buildings, each with its own distinct character
  • A rare setting above the Narmada, the sacred river at the heart of central India
  • Cuisine nourished by the property's organic vegetable garden
  • A heritage setting in a town still untouched by mass tourism

The spirit of the place

Ahilya Fort is managed by Prince Shivaji Rao Holkar, son of Indore's last sovereign, who has undertaken the gradual transformation of the family fort into a welcoming destination. The entire property functions less as a conventional hotel than as a family home open to travellers: shared meals, meticulous attention to detail, staff drawn from the Maheshwar region.

The gardens, designed and planted by Prince Richard, spread across 3 hectares and connect the various sections of the Wada through fountains, shaded pathways and secluded corners. It is easy to find a quiet spot to read, take tea or simply observe the butterflies and birds that frequent the property.

The rooms

The fort offers 19 rooms distributed across six 18th-century buildings. Each structure has retained its original character—thick walls, openings onto interior courtyards, views over the river or gardens—while integrating the comfort amenities expected for a multi-night stay. No two rooms are alike, reflecting the fragmented history of the princely residence.

Dining and services

Ahilya Fort's cuisine draws from the bageecha, the property's organic vegetable garden, which supplies fresh salads, vegetables and seasonal herbs daily. Meals follow a rhythm dictated by the place itself:

  • Breakfast on the mandap terrace, with views over the surroundings
  • Lunch in the Badam courtyard, shaded by trees
  • Dinner by the pool or, on certain evenings, on an island in the Narmada River

The cuisine draws inspiration from Malwa regional recipes and Holkar court traditions, using fresh produce from the garden.

Location

Ahilya Fort is located in Maheshwar, a historic town in Madhya Pradesh renowned for its ghats along the Narmada and its sari weaving. The fort commands the river from its hilltop position, making it an ideal vantage point for observing river life and the ceremonies that unfold there in the evening hours.

Plan for several hours of travel from Indore airport, the most convenient access point to reach the property.

What to see nearby

  • The ghats of Maheshwar: stone steps descending to the Narmada, particularly lively at sunrise and during the evening aarti
  • The Ahilyeshwar temple: an 18th-century structure dedicated to Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, the town's tutelary figure
  • Rehwa weaving workshops: a cooperative preserving the traditional weaving of Maheshwar saris
  • Mandu: an Afghan fortified city roughly half a day away, renowned for its 15th-century palaces and tombs
  • Omkareshwar: a sacred island and one of the twelve jyotirlinga on the subcontinent
