A high-altitude herbaceous plateau in Rudraprayag district, Panwali Kantha serves as a trekking base in the heart of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, surrounded by flowering bugyals and Garhwal peaks.

Panwali Kantha is a high-altitude alpine meadow located in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, in the foothills of the Indian Himalaya. This herbaceous plateau, perched at approximately 2,400 meters, serves as a base camp and starting point for treks to surrounding peaks, notably within the Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary. The place attracts trekkers seeking open landscapes, discreet Himalayan wildlife, and tranquility far from crowded tourist routes.

What to See

The plateau offers sweeping views of the snow-capped ridges of Garhwal. Bugyal vegetation—these alpine meadows typical of Uttarakhand—covers most of the terrain. In season, wild flowers blanket the slopes. The Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary, of which Panwali Kantha forms a gateway, is home to musk deer, snow leopards, and various Himalayan bird species.

History and Context

Panwali Kantha is part of the Garhwal bugyal tradition, these high-altitude pastures used for centuries by local shepherds for summer transhumance. The site remains largely undeveloped, which explains its pristine character. It falls within the buffer zone of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, designated as a biosphere reserve.

Highlights of the Visit

The Trek from Ukhimath or Sari

The most common access starts from the village of Sari or Ukhimath. The trail winds through rhododendron and oak forests before emerging onto the alpine meadow. The gradual ascent allows observation of the transition between dense forest and open grassland.

Flowering Bugyals

Between May and June, before the monsoon, the meadows are carpeted with wildflowers. This is the ideal window for trekking: trails are clear and visibility of the peaks is optimal.

Wildlife Watching

The Kedarnath Sanctuary is one of the few protected habitats for musk deer in India. Early morning outings increase chances of spotting elusive species. Himalayan birds—notably the moonal, the national bird of Uttarakhand—are regularly observed.

Photography Tips

Morning light, before clouds rise from the valleys, offers the best conditions for photographing snow-capped peaks. Flowering meadows photograph well in slight low-angle shots to include the sky. No known photography restrictions at the site.

Frequently asked questions

May-June (before the monsoon) and September-October (after the monsoon) are the most favorable windows. In winter, the plateau is snow-covered and trails are impassable without specialized equipment.

Panwali Kantha is located within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary zone. An entry permit for the sanctuary is generally required; check with local forest authorities in Ukhimath before departure.

Camping is practiced on the plateau, but no fixed infrastructure is guaranteed. Plan for completely self-sufficient equipment (tent, altitude-appropriate sleeping bag, provisions).

From Sari, allow one day's walk to reach the plateau. Many trekkers incorporate Panwali Kantha into a two to four-day circuit combining Deoria Tal and surrounding areas.

An intermediate fitness level is sufficient to reach the plateau from Sari. The elevation gains are significant and altitude exceeds 2,400 m: good physical conditioning and prior acclimatization are recommended.
