Elefantastic
At the gates of Jaipur, Elefantastic allows you to feed, bathe, and paint elephants in an ethical setting, without riding the animals. An immersive and responsible experience to combine with Amber Fort.
Elefantastic is a private sanctuary located on the outskirts of Jaipur, in Rajasthan, dedicated to the welfare of Asian elephants. Unlike traditional elephant rides, the sanctuary prioritizes ethical interaction: feeding, bathing, and painting the animals alongside their mahouts. It's a concrete alternative to the controversial tourist practices that have long shaped the region.
Quick practical information
- Booking: mandatory in advance, directly through Elefantastic's official website
- Clothing: comfortable clothes you're willing to get wet during elephant bathing
- Recommended duration: approximately 2 to 3 hours depending on the program chosen
- Access: the sanctuary is located on the road between Jaipur and Amber; transfers from Jaipur are usually arranged by the sanctuary
- Children: family-friendly activity, but check age restrictions depending on the program
What you'll discover
The sanctuary is home to several elephants, each with their dedicated mahout. Visitors observe their daily routine: food preparation (sugarcane, bananas, chapatis), bathing in the pool, and painting sessions on the animal's skin using natural colors. No elephant rides are offered — this is a deliberate choice by the sanctuary.
History and context
Elefantastic was founded in response to the working conditions imposed on elephants at Amber Fort, where daily climbs on stone steps represent significant physical strain for the animals. The project combines responsible tourism with awareness-raising about the condition of domestic elephants in India, while maintaining the traditional bond between mahout and elephant.
Highlights of your visit
Bathing the elephants
Visitors enter the pool with the elephants and actively participate in bathing, armed with brushes. This is the most immersive moment of the visit, enjoyed by both adults and children alike.
Meal preparation
Cutting sugarcane, assembling giant chapatis: preparing food gives you an understanding of these animals' considerable nutritional needs and creates a gentle first contact.
Skin painting
Using natural pigments, visitors decorate the elephant's flank or forehead. The activity is supervised by the mahout, who ensures the animal's comfort at every moment.
Photography tips
Morning light is ideal: sessions start early, before Rajasthan's heat sets in. Bathing offers the most dynamic shots. Bring a waterproof camera or phone case — splashing is inevitable. Mahouts generally accept being photographed; ask for their permission.
Location and access
Elefantastic is located on the road leading to Amber Fort, about fifteen kilometers from central Jaipur. Most visitors combine the sanctuary visit with a day at Amber. A taxi or tuk-tuk from Jaipur works well; the sanctuary also offers its own transfers at booking.
