Tirupati is a sacred city in Andhra Pradesh, nestled at the foot of the Tirumala hills in southeastern India. It is home to the Venkateswara Temple, one of the most visited Hindu pilgrimage sites in the world. Millions of devotees visit each year to receive the blessing of Vishnu. The city structures its entire daily life around this intense spiritual flow.

What to see here

Tirupati is divided into two levels: the lower town and the Tirumala hills at approximately 850 m altitude. In the lower town, the Govindarajaswamy Temple and the Kodandarama Temple merit a visit. On the hills, the Venkateswara Temple dominates all. Its gold-covered gopurams (gate towers) are visible from afar. The atmosphere of collective devotion, the streams of pilgrims, the continuous rituals create a unique sensory experience.

History and context

The Venkateswara Temple is mentioned in ancient texts from the first millennium onwards. The Pallava, Chola, and Vijayanagara dynasties successively enriched the sanctuary. The TTD, a public organization created in 1933, now manages the temple and redistributes its considerable revenues in social and educational works. Tirupati has thus become a model for institutional management of large-scale pilgrimage.

Highlights of the visit

Venkateswara Temple (Tirumala)

The main sanctuary attracts between 50,000 and 100,000 pilgrims per day. The divinity Venkateswara (form of Vishnu) is adorned with precious jewels and flower garlands. Darshan (vision of the divinity) is the central moment of the pilgrimage. Tickets at differentiated rates allow you to reduce waiting time.

Laddu prasadam

The Tirupati laddu—a sweet ball made from chickpea flour, sugar, cashews, and raisins—is a blessed offering distributed to each pilgrim. Its recipe is protected and its industrial production is ensured by the TTD. Receiving this laddu is an integral part of the ritual.

Akasaganga and Papavinasam

These two waterfalls located in the Tirumala hills are considered sacred. Pilgrims bathe there before entering the temple. The forested environment around Tirumala offers a striking contrast with the bustle of the sanctuary.

Chandragiri Fort

About twenty kilometers from Tirupati, this 16th-century fort was one of the last capitals of the Vijayanagara empire. The Raja Mahal palace and the archaeological museum on site provide insight into the region's history.

Etiquette and visiting rules

  • Non-Hindus are not admitted to the inner sanctum of the Venkateswara Temple; a declaration of Hindu faith is required at the entrance.

Photography tips
