Bassi
Just 40 km from Chittorgarh, Bassi reveals a rural and hidden side of Rajasthan: a fortified palace, a 152 km² sanctuary, and peaceful surroundings far from the crowds.
About forty kilometres from Chittorgarh, in the heart of rural Rajasthan, lies Bassi, a discreet village brimming with charm. Far from the hustle of major cities, it appeals to travellers seeking authenticity, nature, and heritage. Between its fortified palace, natural sanctuary, and proximity to major sites such as Chittorgarh Fort, Bassi offers a serene stopover—perfect for those wanting to discover another facet of Rajasthan.
What to See and Do in Bassi?
Bassi Fort Palace
Bassi Fort Palace is the city's emblematic building. Constructed in the 16th century by Thakur Jaimal, a vassal of Maharana Pratap, this fort was once a princely residence. Today, partially converted into a hotel, it retains numerous period features: thick stone walls, finely sculpted balustrades, flowering courtyards, columned galleries, and antique furnishings.
Even if you don't stay here, it's possible to enter and visit certain sections. The terrace offers unobstructed views over the village and surrounding countryside. The palace's interior bears witness to the refinement of Rajput art. The peaceful atmosphere contrasts sharply with that of more touristy palaces elsewhere in Rajasthan.
Visitors can also enjoy the small garden and shaded rest areas. It's a favoured stop for travellers en route between Bundi, Chittorgarh, and Udaipur who wish to spend a night in an authentic setting.
Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary
Less than 5 km from the fort lies Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary, a 152 km² reserve set within a semi-arid landscape typical of the region. Designated a sanctuary in 1988, it is home to diverse wildlife, including nilgai antelope, wild boar, jackals, foxes, striped hyenas, and occasionally leopards.
Access is by road from Bassi village. The entrance is typically near Orai Dam, a small water body that attracts numerous bird species. In winter, migratory species rest here, making the site popular with birdwatchers.
Exploration can be done on foot along certain trails, though most visitors prefer to hire a vehicle or use their own car. The sanctuary is accessible year-round. The best wildlife sightings occur early morning or late afternoon, especially between November and February.
Beyond its fauna, the site features dry-land vegetation composed of acacias, dhok, and gum trees. It's a fine example of Rajasthan's dry forests—less dense than those in the south, yet rich in biodiversity.
Chittorgarh Fort
Although not located in Bassi itself, Chittorgarh Fort is an unmissable excursion for any traveller passing through the region. From Bassi, expect about 45 minutes' drive to reach this mythical fortress, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The site covers an immense expanse perched on a rocky plateau 180 metres high. Access is via a series of monumental gates and winding ramps. Inside, visitors discover the remnants of a glorious Rajput past: Jain and Hindu temples, water reservoirs, palaces, stone towers…
The Tower of Victory (Vijay Stambh), standing 37 metres tall, is one of the fort's iconic symbols. Built in the 15th century to commemorate a victory over Malwa forces, it is adorned with finely carved religious scenes. Rani Padmini's Palace, positioned beside a tank, also draws attention for its significance in tales of Rajput resistance against the sultans of Delhi.
From the ramparts, views across the plain are breathtaking. The fort can be explored freely or with a local guide, allowing visitors to understand its complex history and the legends surrounding it.
Menal Waterfalls
Take the opportunity during your exploration of the region to visit Menal, nicknamed the "Khajuraho of Rajasthan" for its ancient gothic temples (11th–12th centuries) and erotic sculptures. Nestled deep in forest, it features a spectacular waterfall, particularly dramatic during the monsoon season.
