An artificial lake at the center of Bundi, Nawal Sagar reflects the city's palaces and forts and houses a partially submerged temple dedicated to Varuna.

Nawal Sagar is an artificial lake located in the heart of Bundi, in Rajasthan. Bordered by baoris (stepwells characteristic of the region), it mirrors the palaces and forts perched above the old city on its surface and shelters, at its center, a small partially submerged temple dedicated to Varuna.

Why visit Nawal Sagar Lake

This body of water offers one of the most striking viewpoints over Bundi: from its shores, you can grasp at a glance the silhouette of Taragarh Fort, Garh Palace, and the fortified city mirrored in the water. The presence of surrounding baoris, lotus flowers in season, and the sanctuary of Varuna, a Vedic deity of waters, gives the site a dimension that is at once urban, historical, and spiritual, with no fencing or entrance fee.

A glimpse of history

Nawal Sagar was excavated during the reign of the Hada Chauhans, the Rajput dynasty that made Bundi their capital between the 14th and 19th centuries. Rather than mere embellishment, the lake played a central hydraulic role: it supplied water to the city's numerous baoris, those stepwells indispensable in a semi-arid region where the monsoon is the only rainy season. The temple built at its center, dedicated to Varuna, a Vedic deity associated with waters and cosmic order, recalls this sacred bond between the city and its most precious resource.

What to see and do

  • The temple of Varuna: situated on an islet in the middle of the lake, partially submerged depending on water levels. Access is by boat, which can be hired from the boatmen present on the shore.
  • Bundi reflected: early morning or late afternoon, when the wind dies down, the ochre walls of Garh Palace and Taragarh Fort are clearly outlined in the water.
  • The surrounding baoris: several stepwells border the lake and link back to the city's historic water system.
  • The lotus flowers: present in patches across the water, especially after the monsoon.
  • A complete walk: the lake stretches over a little more than a kilometer, manageable on foot or by rickshaw to reach other sites in Bundi.

Practical information

Access to the lake is free, with no set hours or entrance fee. Boat rental to reach the central temple is negotiated directly with the boatmen at a modest rate. Allow roughly one hour to walk around the shores, longer if you combine the visit with a boat excursion or exploration of nearby baoris. Closed-toe shoes are recommended, as the lake's edges are not systematically developed.

When to visit

The best time to visit Bundi and Nawal Sagar extends from October to April, when temperatures are mild and skies are clear. Summer (May–June) is very hot, and the monsoon (July–September), though it fills the lake and brings lotus blooms, can complicate travel.

How to get there

By air

The nearest airport is Jaipur, approximately 210 km away. From there, taxi or bus can take you to Bundi in about half a day's drive.

By train

Bundi has a small railway station in the south of the city, connected to Kota, Jaipur, Chittorgarh, Agra, and Varanasi. This is often the simplest option for including the city in a Rajasthan circuit.

By car

Kota is roughly 1 hour away by road. From Jaipur or Ajmer, expect 4 to 6 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Once in Bundi, the lake is reachable on foot or by rickshaw from the center.

Nearby

Nawal Sagar is best visited alongside other landmark sites in Bundi: Taragarh Fort and Garh Palace, which dominate the city, Raniji ki Baori, one of Rajasthan's most accomplished stepwells, and Chitrashala, a gallery of murals from the Bundi school. Water enthusiasts can extend the experience at Amar Sagar Lake, near Jaisalmer.
