Jungle Jeep Safari – Periyar Reserve
In Periyar Reserve, jeep safari opens access to interior forest zones unreachable on foot. Asian elephants, gaurs and endemic birds inhabit these trails guided by certified local naturalist guides.
Deep within Periyar National Park in Kerala's hills, jeep safari allows you to venture into forest zones inaccessible on foot or by boat. Wild elephants, gaurs, axis deer, langurs and endemic birds inhabit these deciduous forests and bamboo groves. It is one of the rare ways to explore the buffer zones and interior trails of the reserve with an accredited naturalist guide.
Quick facts at a glance
- Access: departing from the Kumily/Thekkady ecotourism centre, managed by the Kerala Forest Department
- Booking: mandatory in advance via Periyar Tiger Reserve ecotourism office or authorized local agencies
- Recommended duration: approximately 3 to 4 hours per outing
- Best season: dry season from October to April; wildlife is more visible near water points
- Recommended attire: neutral colours (khaki, green, beige), closed-toe shoes, insect repellent
- Accessibility for reduced mobility: limited due to rough forest terrain
What you'll see
The trails cross semi-evergreen forests and dense bamboo zones. The most frequent sightings include:
- Asian elephants in family groups, often near clearings and waterways
- Gaurs (Indian bison), the world's largest wild bovines
- Axis and sambar deer in grassy areas
- Malabar langurs and bonnet macaques in the canopy
- Birds: Malabar hornbill, brown-headed kingfisher, Indian peafowl
Tiger and leopard sightings remain rare but possible, especially early in the morning.
History and context
Periyar Reserve was established in 1978 as part of the Indian Tiger Project. It covers approximately 925 km² and protects one of the last great forest blocks of the Western Ghats, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ecotourism programme, launched in the 1990s, directly involves former poachers retrained as naturalist guides — a model recognized internationally.
Highlights of the visit
Early morning hours
Sunrise departures offer the best observation chances. The light is soft, animals are active, and the forest is still quiet. This is the prime time to spot elephants along the riverbanks.
Interior buffer zones
Unlike standard hiking trails, the jeep allows access to less-frequented buffer zones, where human pressure is almost nonexistent. Wildlife density here is significantly higher.
Local naturalist guides
All guides are trained and certified by the Kerala Forest Department. Many belong to the Mannan or Paliyan tribal communities, with intimate knowledge of the terrain and animal behaviour.
Photography tips
- Favour a long focal length (200 mm minimum): animals are often at a safe distance
- Golden light in early morning (6am–8am) is ideal for photography in woodland
- Avoid flash, which is prohibited and disturbing to wildlife
- Stabilize your camera on the edge of the jeep: trails are bumpy
- Photography is permitted, but drones are strictly forbidden in the reserve
Location and access
The departure point is located at Kumily, on the edge of Thekkady, in Idukki district in Kerala. Kumily is accessible from Kochi (approximately 4 hours by road) and Madurai in Tamil Nadu (approximately 3 hours). The Periyar Tiger Reserve ecotourism office is located near the main park entrance.
Nearby attractions include the Periyar Lake for wildlife cruises, and the tea plantations of Munnar approximately 2 hours to the north.
