The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary spans 14 acres of pristine wetland. It is home to a diverse array of indigenous and migratory bird species.

It's an unmissable experience for nature and bird enthusiasts alike. The prime season for birdwatchers to visit the sanctuary is between June and August. If you visit during this period, you'll encounter wetland residents such as the Indian darter, little cormorant, distinctive egret and heron species, white ibis, and various kingfisher species, among others. The second breeding season occurs between November and May, when tall trees and shrubs become havens for numerous migratory birds that traverse vast distances across regions. The sanctuary encompasses the magnificent Vembanad Lake, which attracts numerous aquatic bird species including the pintail duck, winter teal, spotted-billed duck, and raptors such as the osprey, steppe harrier, and steppe eagle.

Bird watching excursions can also take you on a scenic boat ride to observe regional species across locations such as Kaipuzha Muttu, Pathiramanal, Narakathara, Thollayiram Kayal, and Poothapandi Kayal. You'll have the opportunity to spot both resident and migratory birds, with over a hundred species recorded in the region.
