Alchi Resort
Alchi Resort
A 22-room hotel in the heart of Alchi village (Ladakh), facing Alchi Choskhor monastery and the cliffs of the Indus.
Nestled on a flat bank of the Indus, away from the main routes through Ladakh, Alchi Resort offers a tranquil stopping point overlooking the thousand-year-old monastery of Alchi Choskhor and the rocky cliffs that tower above the river. A destination for those seeking comfortable accommodation in the heart of a remote village without sacrificing the amenities of a modern hotel.
Why stay at Alchi Resort
- A rare location: just steps from Alchi monastery, one of the few sanctuaries in Ladakh to sit on a flat riverbank rather than atop a hilltop.
- Direct views of the rocky cliffs on the opposite bank of the Indus, a sacred river and one of Asia's longest.
- Modern comfort (22 well-equipped rooms, varied dining) in a village where hotel options remain limited.
- A strategic stopping point between Leh and the lower Indus valley, ideal for exploring monasteries at a leisurely pace without returning to the capital each evening.
Atmosphere
Alchi Resort embraces a peaceful village setting. The hotel is situated in the monastery quarter, away from Leh's bustle, in an environment where the rhythm follows that of the river and temples. Stone, the apricot orchards characteristic of Alchi, and the silhouette of ochre cliffs on the opposite bank define the landscape. This is the place for travelers who want to take their time: spend a morning at Alchi Choskhor monastery, read the afternoon overlooking the Indus, and dine on Ladakhi or Kashmiri cuisine in the evening.
The rooms
The hotel has 22 rooms divided into three categories:
- Single Deluxe: for solo travelers.
- Deluxe Double: the most common category, with double or twin beds.
- Suite: for extra space.
Each room features an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold water, satellite LCD television, international telephone, and Internet access—an impressive level of amenities at this altitude and in such an isolated valley.
Services and dining
The hotel restaurant offers multiple culinary traditions: Ladakhi cuisine (momos, thukpa, skyu), Kashmiri wazwan (the grand gastronomic tradition of Kashmir), northern Indian, Chinese, and Continental dishes. You'll find plenty of variety over several nights without leaving the property—a real advantage in a village where external dining options are scarce.
Location
Alchi Resort is located in the heart of Alchi village, directly adjacent to Alchi Choskhor monastery. The village sits on the south bank of the Indus in the lower part of the river valley, approximately 70 km downstream from Leh on the Srinagar road. Count on 2 to 3 hours of driving from Leh airport depending on conditions. Most rooms and common areas offer clear views of the monastery and the rocky cliffs rising across from the resort.
When to visit
The season runs from May to October, when the road between Srinagar/Leh and Alchi valley is passable. One thing to know: the Indus changes character throughout the year. In summer, during the Himalayan snowmelt, its waters remain muddy and laden with sediment. From September onward, water levels drop and the river takes on the golden-green color it's famous for photographically. September and October are therefore particularly recommended for fully enjoying the views from the hotel.
What to see nearby
- Alchi Monastery (Alchi Choskhor): just a few minutes' walk away, renowned for its 11th–12th century frescoes among Ladakh's oldest.
- Likir Monastery: about 30 kilometers away, known for its impressive outdoor statue of Buddha Maitreya.
- Lamayuru: further west, lunar landscapes and a spectacular perched monastery.
- Basgo: fortified ruins and temples on the way to Leh.
