Diving in India: our practical guide

Marine life to discover

Warm year-round, the Indian Ocean is home to an incredible diversity of marine animals. Some have made it their permanent home while others migrate through these waters; in either case, these inhabitants transform the sea into a true display of colors. The Indian Ocean is also renowned for its spectacular coral reefs.

When diving in the Indian Ocean, you'll encounter all manner of marine wonders: pufferfish, clownfish, parrotfish, Napoleons, seahorses, manta rays, hammerhead sharks, and even whale sharks.

The ocean stays warm throughout the year and offers excellent visibility. However, you'll want to time your visit based on which animals you hope to see: for example, if you dream of spotting manta rays, plan your trip between September and December. For whale sharks, February through May offers the best chances.

The best diving sites

Lakshadweep Archipelago

Lakshadweep Archipelago is known for its resemblance to the Maldives, yet it offers practically deserted and unspoiled beaches, shielded from mass tourism. It's truly one of the world's most beautiful diving destinations! Comprising around thirty islands, this archipelago features pristine underwater landscapes with magnificent reefs in every hue imaginable. Here you'll also enjoy the greatest visibility—up to 40 meters—in warm, turquoise waters. You can spot manta rays and whale sharks, as well as impressive shipwrecks and their sunken treasures.

Goa

Goa is an unmissable region of India for those seeking pristine beaches and luxury beach resorts. With 5,000 km of coastline, Goa offers some of India's finest sunbathing spots, but also excellent diving sites. It's an ideal destination for experienced divers and beginners alike. Beyond admiring the rich marine fauna, you can explore shipwrecks from the colonial era and warships! Goa also boasts excellent tourist infrastructure, allowing you to move seamlessly between water activities and enjoy a soothing massage in the evening, then head to a nightclub if you wish.

Andaman Archipelago

This archipelago of 200 islands in the Bay of Bengal is a paradise for divers, who often travel here from Thailand and neighboring countries. The waters near Andaman are incredibly rich: you'll find completely untouched reefs, and even a submerged volcano.
