Photography and Video in India
India, with its captivating light, vibrant colours, and extraordinary scenes, delights every photographer. But the question remains: what equipment should you bring to capture stunning images without overloading yourself with gear that risks damage?
India, with its captivating light, vibrant colours, and extraordinary scenes, delights every photographer. But the question remains: what equipment should you bring to capture stunning images without overloading yourself with gear that risks damage?
Compact and Lightweight
We recommend prioritizing compact and lightweight equipment. Modern digital technology truly allows you this ideal travel compromise. A bridge camera equipped with a powerful zoom will make portrait photography easier while remaining discreet. The video mode also captures remarkable sequences. Consider carrying a monopod to stabilize your device if you plan to shoot a lot of video.
Protecting Your Photography and/or Video Equipment
Dust is a formidable enemy of photographic equipment, so you'll need to protect yours carefully. Pack a cleaning kit with you (a rocket blower proves particularly useful). A lens hood for DSLR-type cameras proves invaluable for protecting against dust and sunlight that could damage the lens.
Possible Restrictions
It's important to know that filming or taking photographs in temples is often prohibited, or you may be required to pay a fee. Religious ceremonies cannot be filmed either. This might be an opportunity to simply observe and fully enjoy these moments without worrying about the souvenir photo.
Memory Cards
Although many shops offer to transfer your photos from memory cards to CDs, we still recommend bringing several spare memory cards with you. There's nothing more frustrating than running out of storage space when your trip isn't yet over.
Batteries
Batteries are readily available in all major urban centres. However, most Indians use their smartphones to take photos. Pack at least one spare battery before departing.
For devices operating on rechargeable batteries, remember to charge them regularly or bring a spare battery. Some itineraries may take you to remote areas where finding electrical outlets to recharge your devices will be difficult.
For smartphones, consider bringing portable chargers such as a powerbank.
And if you want to follow the latest Indian trends, a selfie stick proves absolutely essential!
