The spirit of travel

In the north of the country we enjoy, during the visit to the spectacular Taj Mahal, a captivating introduction to Inde. Under the rays of the rising sun, the Taj adorns itself with a thousand lights. We explore a fortress perched on a hill before discovering, in Delhi, monuments listed as world heritage sites. In the south, we enjoy jungle trekking, cooking lessons to learn all about curries and travel through the backwaters on the typical houseboats of Kerala.
Our journey begins with the drive to Agra where the red fort and the Taj Mahal enchant all visitors. Before continuing to the pink city, we stop at Bharatpur where a rickshaw ride gives us the opportunity to capture different bird species on film, including many migratory birds. Upon arrival in Jaipur, the vibrant historical capital of Rajasthan, we notice the numerous facades still painted, nowadays, in pink. This color gives it its nickname. Flight to the south of the country. In Cochin, the synagogue and the well-preserved Christian church remind us of the colonial past. In Periyar, the rich biodiversity and hills sculpted by tea plantations testify to the wealth of nature. Nestled in the midst of the backwaters, Mankombu, away from the hustle and bustle of the city offers a haven of peace. A cruise through the canals of Kerala, aboard a comfortable houseboat, precedes a few hours of relaxation on the beaches of Mararikulam. The journey ends in Cochin.

After breakfast, we head to Agra, famous for its many monuments from the Mughal era but also known as the city of the Taj Mahal. The city was first mentioned in the Indian epic Mahabharata, where it was called Agrevana (meaning "the forest border"). Although Agra's history is mainly associated with the Mughal Empire, the place existed long before that and has a connection dating back to the Mahabharata period. The city's golden age began with the Mughals. At that time, it was known as Akbarabad and was the capital of the Mughal Empire.

Upon arrival, check-in at the hotel. Then in the afternoon, visit the Red Fort of Agra, a complex of semi-circular red sandstone forts richly decorated with double ramparts and monuments. The rest of the evening is free.

Today, we start our day very early to enjoy an incredible sunrise over the Taj Mahal. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj is a true masterpiece in white marble. A symbol of love, it stands on the banks of the Yamuna River. It was built by the 5th Mughal king Shah Jahan, in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to his fourteenth child. After the visit, return to the hotel for breakfast.

After breakfast, we head to Jaipur, capital of Rajasthan and known as the "Pink City". On the way, we visit Keoladeo Ghana National Park, formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. More than 230 bird species are known to inhabit it. It is also a major tourist center for ornithologists who love to visit during the winter season. It was declared a protected sanctuary in 1971 as well as a World Heritage Site. We are led for bird watching by a rickshaw in an attempt to spot 366 bird species, 379 floral species, 50 fish species, 5 snake species and 7 turtle species.

Later, we will head towards the pink city of Jaipur. It was called the pink city because of its colored pink buildings. Being a lively city of Rajasthan, it is widely known for its fort and palaces. Jaipur was founded in 1726 by Jai Singh II, the king of America who reigned from 1688 to 1758. The city was planned according to the Indianby Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya in 1727.

Jaipur

After breakfast, we venture into the former capital of Rajasthan, 11 km from Jaipur. Famous for its imposing Amber Fort, Amer was the former capital of the Kachhwaha dynasty for 6 centuries. After admiring its beauty and taking some photos, we visit Jaipur City, a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture with a photo stop in front of the Palace of Winds (hawa mahal), a five-story palace with a magnificent pink sandstone façade. It was built in 1799 to allow royal ladies to watch, through the 953 jharokas (small windows), the processions and other festivities that took place on the streets. We then visit Jantar Mantar, a solar observatory built in the 18th century, a true treasure for astronomy, as it measures time according to the movement of the sun with an error of only 2 seconds, thanks to solar devices that provide accurate astrological predictions.

Discovery of Cochin

Today, we are visiting the Fort of Kochi. This building was founded by the Portuguese in 1503 and is surely the first European settlement to have been established in India. Our visit will be guided by the aromas of tea and spices, discovering colorful warehouses, aged bicycles and hand-painted trucks filled with merchandise, as well as food stalls found in every corner. In the afternoon, we visit the Mattancherry Palace (Closed Friday and Saturday) built by the Portuguese as a gift for the Raja of Kochi. A visit to the Jewish synagogue (Closed Friday and Saturday) from the 16th century is also on the program, as well as a visit to the St. Francis Church - the resting place of the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. We explore the city of Kochi, its bazaars and the old port area.

In the evening, an optional visit to see a Kathakali performance, a classical dance form unique to Kerala, concludes the day.

Thekkady - Chenmakary

Periyar National Park also known as Periyar Tiger Reserve. It is located in the mountainous Western Ghats of Kerala, in southern India. It is a protected area near Thekkady in the districts of Idukka, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta in Kerala. The protected area covers an area of 357 m² and 140 m² of the core zone was declared Periyar National Park in 1982. It is home to wildlife such as wild boar, monkeys, flying squirrels and elephants. It is also home to 260 bird species, including pheasants, eagles and kingfishers. We then go on a guided tour in the hope of seeing one of the wildlife creatures.

After completing our guided tour in the park, we head towards Chennamkary village. On the way we stop to visit a tea factory at Vandiperiyar. Later, we arrive at the village of Chennamkary, which is located 12 km to the east from Alappuzha headquarters and surrounded by Veliyanad Taluk to the east. Chennamkary is also the ideal place for filming movies, TV series and music albums due to its stunning landscape. Our accommodation is spread across several village houses featuring typical Kerala architecture. The houses are relatively small and, due to space constraints, the family must share rooms together. All accommodations are close to one another. We are provided with bedding and towels. Our meals are prepared by the residents and served in traditional style so we can enjoy the meal together. We then observe local life and culture up close. Overnight at the house.

The information below applies to travelers who are nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and Canada traveling to India for a tourist stay. Entry rules may evolve, so we recommend that you verify the information with the official authorities before your departure.

Passport

To enter India, your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into the country and contain at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn or altered pages).

Tourist Visa – e-Visa (Tourist eVisa)

Nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland and Canada must be in possession of a valid visa to enter India. There is no visa exemption for a tourist stay.

The most common solution is the Tourist eVisa, available online on the official Indian government portal. It is available for several durations:

  • Tourist eVisa 30 days (double entry),

  • Tourist eVisa 1 year (multiple entries, maximum stay of 90 days per visit),

  • Tourist eVisa 5 years (multiple entries, maximum stay of 90 days per visit).

The application must be submitted online at least 4 days before your arrival date and at most 120 days before. The eVisa is linked to your passport and is available only at certain designated airports and ports of entry.

Arrival and Immigration

When passing through immigration, Indian authorities may ask for:

  • confirmation of your eVisa (printed document or digital version),

  • an exit ticket from the territory (return flight or onward journey),

  • proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay,

  • the address of your first accommodation in India.

Health and Vaccinations

No vaccine is officially mandatory to enter India from the EEA, Switzerland or Canada, except in the case of transit through a country at risk of yellow fever (a yellow fever vaccination certificate will then be required).

As a preventive measure, health authorities generally recommend the following vaccinations:

  • hepatitis A and hepatitis B,

  • typhoid,

  • tetanus-poliomyelitis,

  • rabies (depending on planned activities),

  • Japanese encephalitis (depending on regions and length of stay).

Antimalarial treatment may be recommended depending on the regions you visit and the time of year. Consult a doctor or international vaccination center before your departure.

Traveling with Children

Minors must be holders of their own valid passport and their own eVisa covering the duration of the stay.

In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an exit authorization from the territory may be required according to the regulations of their country of residence.

Other Nationalities

Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Travelers concerned should inquire with the Indian embassy or consulate in their country of residence.
