Traveling through Inde and visiting the remarkable temples that dot the country offers an opportunity to discover the diversity of architectural styles and the richness of sculptures adorning intricately carved walls. Four religious structures stand out. Two are linked to Buddhism: the stupa (or chorten), a monumental reliquary, and the monastery. The sanctuary (Chaitya) and the Brahmanical temple are unique to Hinduism and Jainism.

While the Hindu religion displays its monuments in abundance, the Muslim faith is equally impressive with its mausoleums, the most remarkable being the Taj Mahal, which draws visitors from around the world. Its architectural restraint contrasts sharply with the profusion of sculptures adorning Hindu temples. A visit to the exceptional cave temples of Ellora in Maharashtra or a journey to Tamil Nadu represents an unforgettable experience.

If you cannot carry away a bas-relief, the shops are filled with wood and stone sculptures representing the many gods of the Indian pantheon.
