March 8, 2019 — Medical tourism is projected to grow by 200% by 2020 according to the Ministry of Tourism. This will represent an annual gain of 9 billion dollars for the country.
Medical tourism in India is booming. The country is renowned for the quality of its low-cost surgical interventions, particularly in the cardiovascular field. A coronary bypass, for example, costs $120,000 in the United States compared to $10,000 in India. The subcontinent is capitalizing on its ultra-skilled workforce and, wherever possible, facilities equipped with the latest technologies.
A Medical Haven Thanks to Its Geographic Position
The low cost of medical treatments combined with the competence of nursing staff make India one of the three most sought-after countries by foreigners for medical care. 80% of these patients come from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa—neighboring regions or areas relatively close to the subcontinent. Notably from countries ravaged by conflict, which lack the equipment or personnel necessary for certain complex procedures. Something India can deliver.
Tailored Visas
The subcontinent now aims to attract more Western tourists seeking affordable medical solutions. Visa applications have been, according to Express Business online, modified to facilitate access for those wishing to receive treatment in India. "The electronic tourist visa regime has been expanded to include medical visits. Medical assistance visas have been introduced to streamline the travel process for medical tourists," the outlet explains. The maximum length of stay for medical reasons is set to increase to six months.
