A rural village in Gujarat at the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch, Zainabad is the ideal base for observing the Indian wild ass, flamingos and embroidered craftsmanship of the Rabari communities.

Zainabad is a small rural village in Gujarat, in Patan district, at the gateway to the Little Rann of Kutch. Off the beaten path of conventional tours, it serves as a base for exploring one of the last habitats of the Indian wild ass (Equus hemionus khur) and for encountering the region's artisanal communities. Its position on the edge of the salt desert makes it a privileged entry point into a rare ecosystem.

Quick reference

  • Access: Zainabad is approximately 130 km from Ahmedabad; the route passes through Visnagar or Mehsana.
  • Best time to visit: November to February — moderate heat, wild asses visible on the dried Rann.
  • Recommended duration: 1 to 2 nights to combine safari and visits to artisan villages.
  • Clothing: Light but covered garments, hat and sunscreen essential on the Rann.

What to see

The main attraction is the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, which extends across the Little Rann of Kutch. This salt desert is also home to flamingos, pelicans, demoiselle cranes and migratory raptors in winter. The surrounding villages are inhabited by Rabari and Bharwad communities, renowned for their embroidery and leather work.

History and context

The Little Rann of Kutch is a former inland sea that has dried up. The sanctuary created in 1972 protects the last viable population of Indian wild asses, a species classified as "vulnerable" by the IUCN. Zainabad, a modest agricultural town, has developed discrete rural tourism around this sanctuary and local craftsmanship.

Highlights of a visit

Safari on the Little Rann of Kutch

By jeep or 4x4 vehicle, you traverse the white expanse of the Rann in search of wild ass herds. Herds can number several dozen individuals. Dawn and dusk offer the best viewing opportunities.

Bird watching

The Rann is a major wintering site for flamingos and numerous waders. Between November and February, concentrations of migratory birds are remarkable, particularly around residual wetland areas.

Rabari artisan villages

Rabari women practice fine embroidery featuring geometric and animal motifs. Some local accommodations organize village visits where you can observe — and purchase — this craftsmanship directly from the artisans.

Photography tips

The raking morning light on the Rann creates golden reflections on the salt crust: depart before sunrise. For wild asses, a telephoto lens (200 mm minimum) is recommended — the animals stay at a distance. Avoid midday, the reflection from the salt overexposes images.

Location and access

Zainabad is located in northern Gujarat, Patan district. The nearest railway station is Mehsana, connected to Ahmedabad by train. From Mehsana, a local taxi or bus serves Zainabad. From Ahmedabad, the road is passable by regular car. Access to the Rann itself requires a permit issued by the Forest Department, typically arranged by local accommodations.

Nearby

  • Patan — former capital of Gujarat, famous for the stepped well Rani ki Vav, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Sun Temple of Modhera — a masterpiece of 11th-century Solanki architecture, approximately 70 km away.
  • Little Rann of Kutch — the salt desert that borders Zainabad, heart of the wild ass sanctuary.
