The floating bridge spanning the lake is one of the location's most photographed features. Coconut and casuarina trees provide welcome shade in intense heat.
History and context
Veli Tourist Village was developed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation to offer Thiruvananthapuram residents an accessible leisure space. The site takes its name from Veli village and the eponymous lake, a coastal lagoon typical of Kerala. Sculptures by Kanayi Kunhiraman, an artist from Kerala renowned for his monumental work, were integrated into the park from its inception.
Visit highlights
The floating bridge
This bridge connects the lake shore to a small developed island. Walking across offers an unobstructed view of where the lake meets the sea, particularly stunning in late afternoon.
Kanayi Kunhiraman's sculptures
Scattered throughout the park, these bronze and stone works depict human and mythological figures. They reward close attention: each piece carries its own identity, far from generic decoration.
Beach and lagoon
The strip of sand separating the lake from the Arabian Sea is narrow yet pleasant. Swimming in the sea is possible, but check local conditions before entering the water.
Photography tips
Late afternoon light is ideal for photographing the floating bridge with the lake as backdrop. Sculptures photograph well with morning backlighting. Avoid peak weekend hours if you seek crowd-free frames.
