Culture & HeritageNature & Landscapes

A high-altitude plateau at approximately 4,700 m in the Markha Valley, Nimaling is the flagship stage of the eponymous trek in Ladakh. Nomadic pastures, yak herds and panoramic views of Kang Yatze create a rare mineral and human landscape.

Nimaling is a vast high-altitude plateau located in the Markha Valley, in Ladakh. At approximately 4,700 meters, this summer pasture serves as a base camp for the herds of Changpa nomads and constitutes the key stage of the renowned Markha Valley trek. The plateau opens onto a panorama of snow-capped peaks, including Kang Yatze, and offers a rare immersion into Ladakhi pastoral life.

Quick practical information

  • Access: On foot only — stage of the Markha Valley trek, generally reached from Hankar (approximately one day's walk).
  • Altitude: Approximately 4,700 m — prior acclimatization is essential.
  • Recommended period: June to September (plateau is snow-covered and inaccessible the rest of the year).
  • Accommodation: Camping only; a few nomad tent-guesthouses in season.
  • Permit: Inner Line Permit required for the area (to be obtained in Leh).
  • Accessibility for people with reduced mobility: Not accessible.

What to see

The Nimaling plateau is an open, almost lunar expanse, surrounded by mountains. You'll encounter herds of yaks, horses and pashmina goats tended by Changpa nomads. Kang Yatze (approximately 6,400 m) dominates the valley floor. Sparse vegetation, glacial streams and an intensely blue sky at this altitude compose a mineral and austere landscape.

History and context

Nimaling is a phu — a Ladakhi term for a high-altitude pasture. For centuries, the Changpa nomads have ascended here each summer with their herds to exploit the grasslands. This transhumant way of life, based on pashmina goat herding, is today threatened by climate change and the appeal of cities to younger generations.

Highlights of the visit

Kang Yatze as backdrop

The summit of Kang Yatze, visible from the plateau, is one of the "six-thousanders" accessible to experienced mountaineers. From Nimaling, it represents a climbing objective for equipped groups, with a base camp established on the plateau itself.

Changpa nomadic life

In season, nomadic families set up their black yak-hair tents. Exchanging a few words, observing milking or simply sharing butter tea represents a human encounter difficult to find elsewhere on the trek.

Kongmaru La pass

Most trekkers leave Nimaling heading towards Kongmaru La pass (approximately 5,150 m), the highest point of the Markha Valley trek. The climb from the plateau at sunrise offers views of the Zanskar and Karakoram ranges.

Photography tips

Morning light, before wind raises dust, is ideal for photographing Kang Yatze with nomadic tents in the foreground. Since the plateau is exposed, a polarizing filter is useful for managing the intense sky. Always ask nomads' permission before photographing them.

Location and access

Nimaling is located in the Markha Valley, within Hemis National Park, several days' walk from Leh. The usual starting point for the trek is Chilling (accessible by jeep from Leh via Nimmu). The complete trek typically takes six to eight days. No road access exists to the plateau.
