Between coffee plantations, Tibetan monasteries and Western Ghats hillsides, Coorg reveals a rural and peaceful Inde, to be savored in a homestay.

Nestled in the lush hills of the Western Ghats, in Karnataka state, Coorg is a destination renowned for its temperate climate, verdant landscapes and unique cultural heritage. Also known as Kodagu, this region appeals equally to nature lovers and history enthusiasts. Between tea and coffee plantations, waterfalls, temples and trekking, travelers discover a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for immersion in a different India, more rural and authentic.

History

Coorg's history is shaped by its isolated geography and the distinctive character of its people, the Kodavas. Mentioned as early as the 2nd century in Tamil chronicles, the region long escaped the great empires of South India thanks to its rugged terrain.

From the 16th to the 18th century, Coorg was ruled by the Haleri dynasty. Occupied by Mysore under Hyder Ali and then Tipu in the 1760–1780s, it became a state protected by the British in 1790, before being annexed by them in 1834. After Inde's independence, Coorg briefly became a state of its own, then was integrated into Karnataka in 1956.

Coorg today

Today, Coorg combines heritage and modernity. The district lives primarily on agriculture, coffee cultivation (introduced by the British) and tourism. The region increasingly attracts travelers seeking calm, mountain landscapes and cultural experiences. Madikeri, the capital, serves as a gateway to explore its hills, monasteries and nature reserves.
