Kaylana Lake
Kaylana Lake
Located 8 km from Jodhpur on the road to Jaisalmer, Kaylana Lake (also known as Pratap Sagar) is a body of water created in 1872, cherished for its birdlife and sunsets.
Kaylana Lake is an artificial body of water situated 8 km west of Jodhpur, on the road to Jaisalmer. Developed in the nineteenth century in an arid area near the Thar Desert, this lake, also known as Pratap Sagar, attracts visitors today in search of a nature retreat away from the hustle of the blue city.
Why visit Kaylana Lake?
Kaylana Lake offers a striking contrast to the mineral landscape of western Rajasthan. Lined with trees and frequented by migratory birds, it is a breathing space valued by Jodhpur residents, particularly in the evening hours. The site lends itself to a short visit (1 to 2 hours suffice) and combines easily with an excursion to Jaisalmer or with the discovery of Jodhpur's major attractions.
Unlike the forts and palaces that dominate the city, Kaylana offers an experience focused on observation: birds, evening light, a body of water opening onto the desert. It is a secondary site in the local tourist offering, but useful for breaking up a packed itinerary.
History of Kaylana Lake
The lake was created in 1872 at the request of Pratap Singh, then Prime Minister of Jodhpur. According to local tradition, it was developed on the ruins of gardens and palaces once belonging to Jodhpur's rulers, whose remains were submerged beneath the waters of the new reservoir.
Before opening to the public, the site served as a hunting ground reserved for the royal family. The abundance of birds and wildlife attracted by this water source in a semi-desert region made it an ideal location for this use. The lake still supplies part of the city with water today, which explains its upkeep and preservation.
What to see and do
Flora and fauna
Vegetation is dominated by Babool trees (Acacia nilotica), typical of dry zones in Rajasthan. As for fauna, the lake welcomes various species of migratory birds, among which Siberian cranes have been recorded in season. Bird enthusiasts typically plan a visit early in the morning, when activity is most intense.
Possible activities
- Walks along the developed shoreline
- Leisure boating offered by local operators
- Picnicking in shaded areas
- Bird watching and photography
- Sunset over the lake, the most frequented moment
Swimming is strongly discouraged: the water is deep and the banks can be slippery.
Practical information
Access to the lake is generally free and the site is open during the day. Fees and precise opening hours vary; it is best to check locally or with your accommodation in Jodhpur the day before your visit. Bring water, sun protection and good walking shoes, especially if you plan to walk around the lake.
As the site is not an enclosed park, there are no developed tourist facilities (few restaurants, no visitor center). For a meal, it is more convenient to head back to central Jodhpur.
When to go
The best period to visit Kaylana Lake extends from October to March. Temperatures remain manageable and the late afternoon light highlights the body of water. It is also the season when migratory birds are most abundant.
From April to June, temperatures in the Jodhpur region can exceed 40 °C, making outdoor visits challenging. The monsoon (July-September) remains moderate in this part of Rajasthan, but conditions are less predictable.
