Chikmagalur, nestled in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, blends historic coffee plantations, misty summits and protected forests. A nature destination within reach of exquisite Hoysala temples.

Chikmagalur is a mountain town in central Karnataka, cradled in the foothills of the Western Ghats roughly 250 km from Bangalore. Renowned for introducing coffee to India, it combines aromatic plantations, dense forests and misty peaks. The district attracts trekkers, nature enthusiasts and those seeking verdant escape from the Deccan's sprawling cities.

Quick facts

  • Best season: October to February — mild temperatures, clear skies after the monsoon.
  • Recommended duration: 2 to 3 days to cover plantations, peaks and forests.
  • Access: regular buses from Bangalore (around 5–6 hours) and Mangalore; no direct railway station in town — nearest stations are Kadur or Hassan.
  • Dress code: light but covering clothes for temple visits; raincoat advised outside the dry season.
  • Altitude: the town sits at roughly 1,000 m; Mullayanagiri peak exceeds 1,900 m — bring extra layers.

What to see

Chikmagalur's landscape unfolds in three registers: arabica and robusta coffee plantations blanketing the hills, shola forests harbouring leopards and elephants, and rocky ridges offering vistas across the Ghats. The town itself is modest; the appeal lies entirely in its immediate surroundings.

History and context

Local tradition credits Baba Budan, a 17th-century pilgrim, with bringing coffee to India—seven beans from Mocha in Arabia, planted on the hills now bearing his name. The British subsequently developed plantations at scale in the 19th century, making the district one of the country's earliest coffee basins.

Highlights of the visit

Mullayanagiri Peak

Karnataka's highest point at 1,930 m, Mullayanagiri is reached via an asphalt road to an intermediate car park, then on foot along a rocky trail. A modest temple dedicated to Shiva crowns the summit. On clear days, views sweep across the Ghats toward the coast.

Baba Budangiri Hills

These hills shelter the dargah of Sufi saint Baba Budan, a pilgrimage site shared by Hindus and Muslims. The atmosphere is serene, surrounding forests dense. The trek from the base is accessible to most walkers.

Coffee plantations

Several estates welcome visitors, particularly around Balehonnur and Mudigere. A guided tour traces the full cycle: white blossoms (January–February), red cherries (November–December), pulping and drying. Some estates offer colonial bungalow accommodation.

Bhadra Reserve

An hour's drive away, the Bhadra tiger reserve spans bamboo forests and wetlands. Jeep safaris depart from the Muthodi information centre. Wildlife includes gaur, axis deer, leopards and, more rarely, tigers.

Hebbe Falls

These two-tiered cascades (Great and Little Hebbe) lie within private plantation. Access is on foot or by local jeep from Kemmangundi. Flow peaks from July to September.

Photography tips

Golden morning light on coffee rows is optimal between 7 and 9 a.m. At Mullayanagiri's summit, cloud cover typically lifts mid-morning — arrive early. In Bhadra Reserve, dawn safaris offer the best wildlife viewing. Avoid flash in protected forest areas.

Location and access

Chikmagalur lies in the district of the same name, roughly 250 km north-west of Bangalore and 150 km east of Mangalore. National Highway NH-373 connects the town to Hassan. Local taxis and buses serve major sites from the town centre. Wheelchair accessibility is limited on mountain trails; flat plantation terrain is more manageable.

  • Belur Temple — 12th-century Hoysala architectural masterpiece, roughly 40 km to the north-east.
  • Halebidu — former Hoysala capital with two ornate grand temples, roughly 55 km away.

Frequently asked questions

October to February brings dry weather and pleasant temperatures. The monsoon (June–September) muddies trails but waterfalls are spectacular. Skip March–May, the hot, dry stretch.

Yes. Belur and Halebidu are less than an hour away by road. A 4–5-day circuit from Bangalore can include both temples and 2 nights in Chikmagalur.

The final climb from the car park is short (roughly 30–45 minutes) but crosses uneven rocky ground. It is accessible to walkers in reasonable fitness without specialist gear.

For estate accommodation, advance booking is recommended, especially in high season (November–January). Day tours are often available without prior reservation, but it is wise to confirm directly with the estate.

The dargah is an active place of worship: covering clothing required, shoes removed before entering the sacred precinct. Silence is expected during prayers.

Local jeeps and taxis rent by the day from Chikmagalur. This is the most practical way to link plantations, peaks and the forest reserve, as public transport runs infrequently on these routes.
