Charm & Character

A former property of Sikkim's royal family, Elgin Mount Pandim spans 8 hectares in Pemayangtse, facing the Singalila range.

Elgin Mount Pandim occupies an 8-hectare estate of forest and landscaped gardens in Pemayangtse, in western Sikkim. The establishment originally belonged to Sikkim's royal family, whose heritage still marks the architecture and atmosphere of the place. Located approximately 150 km from Siliguri, the property overlooks the Singalila range and offers one of the clearest views of the eastern Himalayas from any accommodation in the region.

Why choose Elgin Mount Pandim

This accommodation appeals to travelers seeking a heritage base in western Sikkim, rather than a simple transit hotel. Several elements distinguish it:

  • Tangible royal heritage: the former summer residence has been transformed into a hotel while preserving its original character.
  • An 8-hectare estate blending forest and landscaped gardens, isolating the property from the bustle of nearby towns.
  • Direct views of the Singalila range, particularly clear in autumn and spring.
  • A location in immediate proximity to Pemayangtse Monastery, one of the oldest in Sikkim.

Atmosphere and architecture

The main building preserves the hallmarks of early 20th-century Himalayan residences: wooden volumes, period furnishings, Burmese teak flooring that runs through much of the rooms. The overall approach favors subtlety, without museological recreation: you move through spaces that are genuinely lived-in, punctuated by pieces and photographs evoking Sikkim's royal lineage.

The gardens, maintained for several decades, form an integral part of the experience. Clear pathways, central lawns, denser wooded areas along the estate's edges: visitors can spend a good hour strolling through before retiring to the veranda for tea.

The rooms

The hotel has 30 rooms in total, divided into two main categories:

Deluxe Suites

The suites consist of a bedroom and adjoining sitting room. They are equipped with king-size beds and retain the Burmese teak flooring that characterizes the property.

Double Deluxe

Most Deluxe rooms overlook the garden and the Himalayan range. They also feature king-size beds and the same teak flooring. Each room has a slightly different layout, inherited from the building's original configuration.

Location

Pemayangtse is located in Gyalshing district (West Sikkim), at an altitude of approximately 2,100 meters. From Siliguri (New Jalpaiguri railway station and Bagdogra airport), allow a day's drive, roughly 150 km via mountain tracks. Most travelers arrive here after a stop in Darjeeling or Gangtok.

Nearby attractions

Several major Sikkim sites are accessible from the hotel:

  • Pemayangtse Monastery (Nyingmapa, founded in the 17th century), just minutes away.
  • The ruins of Rabdentse, the former capital of the Sikkim kingdom, on a neighboring wooded spur.
  • Pelling, the principal viewpoint over Kangchenjunga, a short drive away.
  • Sangachoeling Monastery, accessible via a forest walk.
  • Khecheopalri Lake, a sacred lake nestled in the neighboring valley, for a half-day excursion.
