History
Founded in the 15th century by King Drag-pa-Bum, Tingmosgang is the birthplace of the Namgyal dynasty, a powerful and influential lineage of Ladakh. Under the reign of his grandson, Bhagan, this dynasty shaped the region's history until annexation by the Dogras in 1841. Tingmosgang holds considerable historical significance, having been the site of numerous crucial diplomatic transactions. In 1684, the Treaty of Tingmosgang, or Treaty of Temisgam, was signed between Ladakh and Tibet, ending armed conflicts with the Mughals and establishing exclusive trade agreements. This treaty granted Ladakh the right to trade Tibetan pashmina wool in exchange for brick tea and required the periodic dispatch of missions to Lhasa bearing gifts for the Dalai Lama.
