Perched on a rocky hilltop midway between Delhi and Jaipur, Neemrana Fort is a 15th-century fortress converted into a luxury palace hotel. Its tiered terraces, hanging gardens and views over the Rajasthan plains make it a major architectural stop on the maharaja trail. Even without staying overnight, the site deserves a visit for its palatial architecture and timeless atmosphere.

What to See

The fort rises across ten levels of terraces carved into the rock. Each level reveals inner courtyards, vaulted galleries, pools and gardens planted with bougainvillea. The rooms and suites, arranged within former royal apartments, retain frescoes, jharokhas (cantilevered windows) and period furnishings. The infinity pool at the heights offers a sweeping panorama over the arid plains.

History and Context

The fort was founded around 1464 by Raja Rajdeo, chief of the Chahamana clan. For three centuries, it served as a residence for local rulers before gradually being abandoned in the 19th century. In 1986, the Neemrana Hotels group acquired it and undertook meticulous restoration, pioneering the concept of a "heritage hotel" in India. The project is now cited as a reference for the preservation of Rajput architectural heritage.

Highlights of the Visit

The Tiered Terraces

Climbing level by level reveals changing perspectives over the Rajasthan countryside. Each terrace has its own identity: courtyard of honour, rose garden, open-air pool. The architecture seamlessly blends Mughal and Rajput influences.

The Neemrana Zipline

Immediately adjacent to the fort, a zipline allows you to soar over the hill and surrounding area. It is one of Rajasthan's longest and a popular activity for daytime visitors. Booking is recommended on-site or in advance.

Sunsets from the Heights

In late afternoon, golden light bathes the ochre ramparts and the plains stretch endlessly. This is the site's most photographed moment, accessible from the upper terraces.

Photography Tips

Morning light (before 9 a.m.) and evening light (after 4 p.m.) are ideal for photographing the ochre facades without harsh shadows. The most interesting angles are from the upper terraces, shooting upward towards the lower levels. Inside, the jharokhas naturally frame portraits. Avoid flash in the hotel's private areas.
