History
Bijapur was developed on the former urban site of Bijjanhalli around 1074. Once called Vijayapura, it is the city of victory for the Chalukya. The city later became the capital of the Yadava dynasty during the 12th and 13th centuries. Muslim influence gradually grew in Bijapur with the arrival of Delhi's Sultan Alâ ud-Dîn Khaljî, followed by the Bahmani from Bîdar in 1347. Later, in 1481, Yusuf Âdil Khan was appointed governor of the city by Muhammad Laskrî Bahmanî III.
Son of Ottoman Sultan Murad II, Yusuf Âdil Shâh took control of Bijapur and undertook the construction of numerous monuments. Following India's Declaration of Independence in 1947, the region was integrated into the Bombay State before being reassigned to the Mysore territory. In 1956, Bijapur was finally incorporated into Karnataka.
