Wonderland Tourist Camp
A 17-tent camp at Spangmik, on the southern shore of Pangong Lake in Ladakh. Lake views, attached bathrooms, and logistics adapted to high altitude.
Wonderland Tourist Camp is a tent camp located at Spangmik, on the southern shore of Pangong Lake, in Indian Ladakh. At over 4,300 metres altitude, the property offers 17 tents facing the lake, designed to withstand the challenges of elevation and provide functional comfort in an isolated environment.
Why stay here
Sleeping beside Pangong remains one of the few ways to fully experience this high-altitude lake that shifts colour throughout the day. The camp sits on an elevated area of Spangmik village, which commands clear views across the water and mountain ranges beyond. It's a stop suited for travellers who embrace camp-style comfort in exchange for a naturally remote setting.
Three elements set the place apart:
- 17 tents facing the lake, each with an attached bathroom (hot and cold water).
- Logistics tailored to altitude: oxygen cylinders on hand and backup power supply in case of outages.
- An elevated location offering unobstructed views across the landscape, lake and peaks included.
Atmosphere
The mood is quintessentially high-altitude Himalayan: silence, crystalline skies once darkness falls, cold temperatures from sunset onward. During the day, guests alternate between walks along the shore and quiet time at camp. In the evening, a campfire can be arranged on request, marking the night at a place with no nightlife or urban distractions. Camp life revolves around the restaurant and the views.
The tents
The camp has 17 tents, all facing Pangong Lake. They are built to withstand the region's climate and each includes a private bathroom with shower, toilet and hot/cold water. Every tent is fitted with quilts and warm blankets, essential as nights remain cool even in summer. A backup power supply kicks in during outages, which are common at this altitude.
Services and amenities
- On-site restaurant and room service.
- Continental breakfast or buffet option.
- 24-hour reception.
- Oxygen cylinders available, useful if altitude-related discomfort occurs.
- Power backup supply.
- Campfire on request.
- Transfer service to and from Leh airport.
- Car rental and activity arrangements through the camp, including rafting on the Zanskar River and, depending on season and local logistics, camel excursions in Nubra Valley.
Location
Spangmik is one of the first inhabited villages when reaching the southern shore of Pangong from Leh. The route, crossing Chang La pass (over 5,300 m), typically takes 5 to 6 hours by vehicle. The camp overlooks the lake, ensuring an unobstructed panorama across the water and surrounding terrain.
When to visit
The Pangong season runs mainly from late May to early October, when Ladakh's mountain passes are open. July and August offer the mildest temperatures but also the highest visitor numbers. June and September are attractive compromises: clear skies, sharp light over the lake, fewer crowds. Outside this window, access becomes uncertain due to snow.
Nearby
- The southern shores of Pangong Lake, ideal for lakeside walks.
- Chang La pass, on the route from Leh.
- Nubra Valley, reachable in several hours' drive, to extend a Ladakh itinerary.
- Leh and its monasteries (Thiksey, Hemis, Shey) on the way out or back.
