Judges Court
Judges Court
A heritage manor designed by Bhandari Ram and a three-hundred-year-old ancestral home in Pragpur, Kangra Valley (Himachal Pradesh).
Judge's Court occupies a country manor designed by Bhandari Ram, adjoining a three-hundred-year-old ancestral home, in the village of Pragpur at the heart of Kangra Valley (Himachal Pradesh). Together they form a heritage accommodation that preserves the character of a North Indian family residence while welcoming travellers in ten double rooms, three of which are suites.
Why stay at Judge's Court
- A heritage manor whose architecture and outbuildings have spanned over three centuries of family history.
- An integrated agricultural approach: farm, dairy and spring water supply the hotel's table.
- A rural setting in Kangra Valley, ideal for extended stays and excursions throughout Himachal Pradesh.
- A limited number of rooms (ten), ensuring personalised service.
Atmosphere and heritage
The estate comprises two distinct buildings. The country manor, designed by Bhandari Ram, exemplifies late colonial architecture adapted to the Himalayan foothills. The ancestral home, older still, has retained its original volumes and forms the historical heart of the place. Set within the typical rural landscape of Kangra, dotted with orchards and cultivated fields.
The atmosphere remains that of a grand family home: reception rooms opening onto the garden, period furnishings, heirloom objects. The terraces offer sweeping views across Kangra Valley and, on clear days, the mountain ridges beyond.
The rooms
The accommodation comprises ten double rooms, three of which are suites, all located in the bungalow of the ancestral courtyard. The limited capacity preserves the tranquility of the estate and allows for attentive service. The volumes and decoration remain in keeping with the original building's character.
Services and sustainable approach
Judge's Court operates in partial self-sufficiency. The estate grows its own fruits, vegetables, wheat, maize and oilseeds, which supply the hotel kitchen. The dairy produces milk consumed on the premises and water is drawn from the spring. The house is committed to organic practices and seeks to minimise its impact on the immediate environment.
Airport transfer service is available with 72 hours' notice and should be arranged at the time of booking.
Geographic location
The estate is located in Pragpur, Kangra Valley (Himachal Pradesh), approximately 60 km from the towns of Una and Hoshiarpur, which serve as the nearest terrestrial gateways. Access is typically by car from these two towns, or via regional railway stations and airports. Allow several hours' drive from Chandigarh or Delhi depending on your route.
What to see in the region
Pragpur is one of India's first villages to have been classified for its heritage, with its cobbled streets and traditional houses. Kangra Valley is home to several sites of interest: Kangra Fort, the rock-cut temples of Masroor, and the Tibetan monasteries around Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj, accessible as day excursions.
To extend your heritage experience in North India, you can combine this stay with other character properties such as Woodville Palace Hotel in Shimla or Ranthambore Heritage Haveli in Rajasthan. For nature-focused stays, Red Earth and Wonderland Tourist Camp offer different experiences.
