Highly renowned for its trekking trails, its valleys, mountains and Himalayan peaks, the growing number of visitors each year does, however, have an impact on its landscape. If you're planning a stay in Ladakh, whether for relaxation or adventure, here are some useful tips to help you preserve this unique environment as much as possible, while also ensuring you don't forget anything in your backpack for a perfectly prepared trek!

A Few Tips…
Ladakh's Climate
The Ladakh region experiences two completely opposite seasons:
- Winter, from mid-October to mid-May, very cold with average temperatures below zero and dropping to as low as −30°C;
- Summer, meanwhile, is very dry, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C but very cool nights averaging around 10°C.
Responsible Behaviour On-Site
Ladakh and its valleys boast a unique ecosystem that is extremely sensitive to the human footprint left in its wake. This is why certain behaviours should be adopted to respect this exceptional environment as much as possible:
- Pack reusable thermos bottles
- Avoid flush toilets
- Leave no waste behind you
Equipment to Bring
- Trekking poles
- Beanie
- Long-sleeved t-shirts
- Fleece jacket
- Jacket
- Tights (for extra warmth at night or worn under hiking trousers)
- Hiking trousers and capris/three-quarter length pants (shorts should be avoided)
- Socks
- Hiking boots (Note: Make sure to bring shoes already broken in to your feet to avoid blisters and friction during your stay)
- Sandals, to rest your feet during breaks
- Lightweight gloves, suitable for trekking
- Hiking backpack (30 or 40 litres are sufficient for a day)
- Travel bag, preferably soft-sided (between 70 and 90 litres)
- "4-season" tent for protection from the cold at altitude
- Mummy sleeping bag
- Sleeping bag liner for protection and added warmth
- Toiletries bag
- Water purification tablets
- Freezer bags, to protect certain items
- Emergency blanket
- Water bottle
- Knife
- Lighter
- Headlamp and batteries
