The spirit of travel
This journey explores, at a more leisurely pace, different facets of South Inde highlighting fascinating places and numerous points of interest. Starting in Mysore and ending in Trivandrum, it crosses an amazing blend of traditional towns, mountainous or coastal landscapes, with endless white sand beaches, all enhanced by the delicious food of South Inde. This cycling trip at a moderate pace between Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala is an excellent way to discover a part of Inde almost ignored by time. Our route crosses the cool hills of the Western Ghats and stops in the animal sanctuaries of Bandipur and Mudumalai, giving us a glimpse of wildlife. Elephants, tigers and leopards live here in their natural habitat of jungles and bamboo forests.
After cycling through the picturesque town of Ooty, perched in the rolling hills of the Nilgiri, we descend towards Kerala where we ride at the foot of ancient forts and past religious sanctuaries, crossing timeless villages. Heading south, we dedicate a day to the old colonial town of Kochi where we enjoy a night in a guesthouse and another in a houseboat during a cruise in the backwaters. The vast network of canals and lakes, unique to Kerala, precedes the final coastal hike to Varkala. We will then have the opportunity to relax on the beach and recall this unforgettable experience of rural Inde.

Day-by-day itinerary

Arrival in Bangalore and Transfer to Mysore
Bangalore (Bengaluru) → Mysore (Mysuru)
Arrival at Bangalore international airport. After traditional airport welcome, we are transferred to our hotel in Mysore. Upon arrival, we check in at the hotel. In the afternoon, we have time to visit the central market (central Bazar) and the magnificent Maharaja palace. Rebuilt in the 20th century after a fire in 1897, its architecture is rich and expressive and its baroque-style interior provides insight into the great wealth of the Maharajas of Mysore. Then we gather our bikes. If you have any, you can bring yours, otherwise we provide rental bikes.

One Day Excursion to Chamundi Hills
In the morning, we leisurely follow the road towards the north of Srirangapatna, heading towards the ruins of the capital of the great emperor Tipu Sultan. The palace was destroyed by the British army in 1799 during the decisive battle for the protection of southern India. The ruins stand on an island in the middle of the Cauvery river. Once we arrive at the bridge, we cycle around the old fortifications to enter Colonel Bailey's Dungeon and the Ranganatha Swamy Temple. Furthermore, on the island is Jama Masjid, a mosque built by Tipu Sultan in 1787, as well as the Dariya Daulat Bagh, which is Tipu Sultan's summer palace. After spending time discovering the island, we then head to Mysore for lunch. In the afternoon, we cycle up to Chamundi Hill to see Shiva's bull. It is a sculpture named Nandi that stands 5 metres high, carved from a single block of granite.

Let's take the road to Bandipur National Park
After breakfast, we leave the hotel and head south towards country roads, where the majority of India's colorful rural life can be found. Passing through villages we can observe women in their colorful saris, carrying jars on their heads. We then head towards the important pilgrimage center of Nanjangud. There, we visit the impressive temple of Srikanteshwara, dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. After lunch, we embark on a drive to the forest foothills of the Western Ghats (hills). Once, the site was the hunting reserve of the Maharajas of Mysore, today it has become a tiger reserve and part of the Bandipur National Park.
In the late afternoon, we go on a jeep safari in the park.

Cycling from one park to another
Early in the morning, we have the opportunity to go on another safari. It's a perfect chance to see the gaur of Inde (Indian bison), wild elephants and sambar. After breakfast, we take a break for a few hours before heading south to a verdant park where we have the chance to encounter deer and monkeys within the forests that line the road to the Mudumalai National Park, in Tamil Nadu. The afternoon is free to discover the region of « Wild Haven » (wild paradise). We stay in a rustic bungalow with a fantastic view of the Nilgiri mountains, on one side, and of Mudumalai on the other.

Stays in Ooty: the queen of hill stations
Mudumalai National Park → Ooty
Today, a very interesting day awaits us as we head towards the Ootacamund hill (2240 m), commonly called Ooty. The 36 hairpin curves that wind along this road offer stunning views at every turn and leave us with a sense of fulfillment when we reach the summit. Located in the Nilgiri Hills, Ooty served as the summer capital for the British during the colonial era. Its stunning beauty and temperate climate won over the British so much that they called it « Queen of Hill-Stations » or the queen of hill-stations. Some members of our group prefer to walk and enjoy a relaxed morning but also explore the hill in the support vehicle. To enjoy the final 1600-meter climb, we have chosen to cycle to our pleasant accommodation in Ooty.
Our afternoon is free to explore the town and taste the famous cardamom tea.

Guruvayur - Famous for Tea Plantations
Today, our walk follows the road that winds through the tea fields that dominate the Nilgiri Hills region. It is pleasantly cool at around 2000 meters and this route offers excellent views of the hills below. We continue through the hills and slopes covered with tea, the Western Ghats in order to reach Gudalur, at the junction of the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. From this indescribable native town, we pick fresh fruit and continue our descent through even more lush vegetation in a typical Kerala restaurant, the point where we conclude our day's bike tour program. From there, we head to Guruvayur on the coast in order to avoid a section of busier roads.

Guruvayur - Discovery Day
Today, we start with a morning stroll on the coast at Chavakkad Beach, where we see colorful fishing boats. We also meet groups of fishermen carrying their nets on the shore. Then, we cycle along the country roads in the Thrissur district, seeking some of the quietest streets in this relaxed rural neighborhood. The countryside, their traditional ways of life and its inhabitants with their colorful clothes offer us beautiful photos. We also meet some ceremonial elephants that are employed at the Sri Krishna Temple at Guruvayur which is organized during the night puja. At the temple, burnt josh sticks and fragrant flower stands complete the atmosphere. People dressed in their beautiful lungis and saris light the immense mortar of 7 m oil lamps in front of the large temple gates, a magnificent sight to admire and appreciate.

Route to the Venice of India
After breakfast, we leave the city and follow the road of the south coast, passing through palm trees and small villages, with the sea on our right. Mango and coconut trees line the roads and leave us with a feeling of calm. We take the opportunity to swim and enjoy the beautiful beach, then we have lunch. We look for a restaurant with a sea view to taste superb seafood dishes, a specialty of Keralan cuisine. After lunch, we continue the journey to reach the port where we board ferries to reach the city center of Kochi. This city is a unique place in the history of India, and to enjoy the good atmosphere, we spend two nights there.

Cochin (Kochi) - One Day Excursion
Today, free time to discover the city of Cochin. We stroll through winding streets where you can find Portuguese houses 500 years old, a synagogue, palaces and forts, which extend across a charming group of islands and narrow peninsulas. We visit the Mattancherry Palace, built by the Portuguese for the Raja of Cochin in 1557. Next to this palace is a synagogue built in 1568 for Jews, members of Cochin's commercial communities. We also explore the city of Kochi, its bazaars and its old port. In the evening, there is the possibility of an optional visit to see a Kathakali performance, a unique classical dance form found in Kerala.

Night in a floating house in the heart of a vast network of canals
In the morning, we head south, out of the city on a narrow strip of land that lies between the Laccadive Lake and the Kerala backwaters. We settle along the coastal road, taking our time and stopping in small fishing villages. We admire the villagers who cast their nets or transport their boats on the beach on wooden rollers. The majority of these fishing villages have a Christian population, so we visit a number of churches, the most famous of which is located in Cherthala. We have lunch before continuing our journey along the old coast to Alleppey while following the canal. We stop at a traditional Keralan house near the town of Alleppey. We spend time in the garden of the house while admiring the great Vembanad Lake.

Explore the Backwaters of Alappuzha (Alleppey)
After breakfast, we take time to cycle around the city and also explore it on foot. Alleppey is one of the centers for exploring the backwaters of Kerala. At noon, we board a beautiful houseboat to take an unforgettable journey to Kollam. Placed on the framework of large traditional boats, known as Kettuvallams, the houseboats offer surprisingly luxurious cabins. It is a unique and fascinating expanse of water, surrounded by palm trees that unfolds before us. We relax, without worrying about the passage of time. All sorts of commerce can be conducted on the lake and canals, thus forming a fascinating network of waterways. On one side of the canal are vast rice fields stretching as far as the eye can see. On the other hand, you can see fishing nets and coconut trees. At sunset, the boats are moored together and we gather to watch it descend beyond the horizon, a wonderful moment that will remain etched in our memories forever.

A classic beach in Kerala
Alappuzha (Alleppey) → Varkala
Today, our breakfast is served in our cabins, onboard the boat. We then move to our disembarkation point where we pick up our support vehicle to begin the final stage of our cycling tour. Once again, following the coastal road, we head south to Valaazhikal, where we cross the river mouth aboard a fishing boat. Five kilometers away, we visit a popular monastery the « Hugging Mama Ashram». We then join the main road towards Quilon and take a lunch break near the city of Kollam. We then continue our journey on quiet roads for approximately 30kms to Varkala. It is a peaceful place with cafes and yoga schools built along its cliff.

Explorer les alentours de Varkala
We have the whole day to relax in this quiet resort. We take this time to stroll on the beaches, discover the shops, and savor the seafood dishes and tandoori dishes in local restaurants. Tandooris are typical of the northern region of Inde, they are cooked in clay ovens to keep their authentic taste composed of breads and curry. We then spend the night at the hotel.

Departure from Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum)
Varkala → Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum)
In the morning, we are taken to Trivandrum international airport to board our flights to our respective countries.

The most common solution is the Tourist eVisa, available online on the official Indian government portal. It is available for several durations:
Tourist eVisa 30 days (double entry),
Tourist eVisa 1 year (multiple entries, maximum stay of 90 days per visit),
Tourist eVisa 5 years (multiple entries, maximum stay of 90 days per visit).
The application must be submitted online at least 4 days before your arrival date and at most 120 days before. The eVisa is linked to your passport and is available only at certain designated airports and ports of entry.

Health and Vaccinations
No vaccine is officially mandatory to enter India from the EEA, Switzerland or Canada, except in the case of transit through a country at risk of yellow fever (a yellow fever vaccination certificate will then be required).
As a preventive measure, health authorities generally recommend the following vaccinations:
hepatitis A and hepatitis B,
typhoid,
tetanus-poliomyelitis,
rabies (depending on planned activities),
Japanese encephalitis (depending on regions and length of stay).
Antimalarial treatment may be recommended depending on the regions you visit and the time of year. Consult a doctor or international vaccination center before your departure.

In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an exit authorization from the territory may be required according to the regulations of their country of residence.
